Cannot say enough good things about Mr. Epstein and the team at Poyner Spruill. Divorce is the hardest, and having a communicative, concise and passionate attorney to help you through the process is crucial - and often too rare. My situation was unique in many ways, and Mr. Epstein was able to navigate it with aplomb and allow me to gain safety in a complicated and painful circumstance. Highly recommend.

Hiring Steve Epstein to help me with the many issues that I was facing regarding a very complicated and messy divorce that included a wide array of valuable assets-- a very successful company, multiple homes, expensive cars, dozens of accounts of all types, in addition to his help in regards to custody, a DWI case, being in a 5 week coma, and steering me out of significant life or death substance abuse issues, was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Steve is a zealous advocate for his clients. He is also a brilliant strategist, and his organizational skills and preparedness were top caliber. Simply put, I honestly do not even know if I would alive to write this review if it wasn't for Steve. He has also been a great mentor, and has helped me in understanding how to be a better father for my little girl, and a better person overall. I will forever be grateful for having him by my side during the darkest, most tumultuous time of my life. He is as good at what he does as anyone I have ever met. Thank you, Steve!

Steve is a real professional at all he does, particularly Family Law. He is my MVP. His credentials reflect his many accomplishments in his life. He is someone who commands respect which makes him a great advocate as a Family Law Lawyer. We had a large and complex financial structure that Steve was able to simplify, communicate and equitably divide in cooperation with my ex and her attorney, applying the Family Law regulations and guidelines objectively and fairly. He made a difficult process easier, minimizing emotions and drama and calmly staying focused on facts and details and rules of law. I am grateful I was referred to Steve and recommend him as your Family Law lawyer.

Steve is the best family law attorney I have ever worked with. From our first meeting, he explained everything to me in terms I could easily understand and was always very responsive when I had questions outside of our meetings. After battling for a settlement for a couple years and spending an enormous amount of money with previous attorneys who had little hope for a better outcome, Steve took my case and turned things around in no time and changed my outcome for the best and without fear. Everything the other attorneys i previously hired told me they couldn’t do, Steve was able to accomplish it in no time. After 2 years of battle with my ex and no hope, he got him to execute an agreement that is much more favorable for me in just a couple months. He knew how to handle him and his attorney and they stopped the bullying and wrong doings. His fees are a little higher than some other attorneys, but you will get better results and end up saving at the end as he can achieve more in less time and it all worth it knowing you’re in good hands. I now have peace of mind knowing that Steve will be there to handle the situation if another issue was to arise. If anyone is looking for a knowledgeable and highly motivated attorney, then go to Steve. You won’t regret it!

Steve is an incredibly competent and exceptionally savvy family law attorney. He knows exactly what should be done, when it should be done, and when silence and waiting is the best tactic. He is a master negotiator. Steve was a true advocate and trusted guide for me throughout a difficult divorce. He delivered an incredible outcome on every front, from helping me see clearly during my initial shock upon learning I was heading to divorce, through mediation and child support and finally in negotiating an excellent settlement for me in my alienation of affection lawsuit as plaintiff. I would be hard pressed to find a family law attorney who could hold a candle to Steve. I do not typically write reviews but I am writing this one for Steve because he's quite possibly the best family law attorney in North Carolina and certainly delivered for me. The title of this review is "17 stars" because each time Steve slayed another dragon for me, I added a star. If you are reading this and struggling with divorce and related matters, hire Steve. Seriously, just do it. He's the best there is.

I got a traffic citation when traveling home from vacation. Cotten Law Firm handled my case for me so I didn’t have to travel 6 hours back to NC. Case was reduced to Improper Equipment. Could not have been more pleased! I called multiple times to check on things and was always greeted by a kind and helpful person on the other end of the phone. Highly recommend!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
