My divorce was just recently finalized, and therefore I feel that I can now write this review. Cary Close represented me, and I am truly grateful to have had Cary helping me through the most incredibly painful experience of my life. I was married for an extremely long time, and I never expected to be in this situation. The past year and a half (of "separation") has been indescribably challenging for me on all levels. I didn't have a clue about any of it, including what attorney to use. My brother, who lives in another city, asked an attorney friend there to "network" among his colleagues in the legal community, and he provided me with his names of "the best" divorce lawyers in Raleigh, of whom Cary was one of his top three. I spent countless hours researching them & others (I'm a perfectionist by nature), had a brief dalliance with another attorney (a great "learning experience" for me) and ultimately ended up selecting Cary. I could not have made a better choice for myself. In my opinion, Cary is highly knowledgeable and experienced re: divorce law. She is also really smart, fair, equanimous, strong and honest. Another critically important component for me is that she is not contentious first. She, like me, prefers negotiation if possible. This is significant because, in my view, the only people who "benefit" from being combative are the lawyers. I needed someone who could assist in keeping me grounded, focused and positive in a situation that is beyond stressful, arduous, taxing. Make no mistake, though: I have absolute confidence that if things had gotten to that point, I would want her in my corner because I believe that she can be tough but fair, if need be. That, combined with her knowledge and experience, made me feel secure in my decision. She has further been truly mindful of the costs involved. She tries to keep her fees reasonable by utilizing her paralegal assistant, Laurie, whenever/wherever possible. Laurie is also excellent! She, too, is efficient, experienced and knowledgable. Divorce is difficult (understatement), and divorce is expensive. I feel that Cary is cognizant of that and makes every attempt to keep it as reasonable as she can. I'm actually quite a private person; however, I decided to do this evaluation because Cary has done such a superb job on my behalf, and I'm so appreciative! I know that this is a rather long review; however, I hope that it may help others in making a decision which was extraordinarily daunting for me. I'd encourage those searching for an excellent divorce attorney to add Cary Close to their list of those with whom to consult. The greatest compliments I can add are that I would highly recommend her to anyone who asks, and I would give her more than 5 stars, if that was possible. Thanks to Cary (and Laurie) for helping me through the most formidable and trepidatious period of my entire life!

Cary Close embodies the finest of the legal profession. Intelligence, Integrity, Sensitivity, Compassion, and Vigorous Advocacy for her clients. Always over-prepared, always ready and can see the pylons before they are on the horizon. In equal measure Cary Close is an outstanding human being - yes, she gets paid but she cares about her clients; cares that in the aftermath of a family law event you are as whole as possible as a person. I can not image a better combination of professionalism, and humanity in the legal profession. Quite simply - Superwoman as a Lawyer. I would and have on many occasions recommended Cary Close to friends in need. To a person everyone has come back and said 'THANK YOU' - you referred me to the best.

When I first met Cary, I didn't think she could be real. I was looking for a dogfight with my spouse and was hoping for an attorney that would bite. She did, but not in the way I thought a lawyer would. I was in the mood to be revengeful and spiteful. Her advice to me…..is this what's best for your child??? WOW!! An attorney that actually sees the big picture. As the years have gone by, and the dust has settled, there's no better advice than to do what's in the best interest of your child. I can't thank Cary enough.

I can't thank Cary enough for the professionalism that she showed during every meeting we had. Unfortunately, my case had to go to court (Cary did everything she could to avoid court….knowing/advising it would be ugly). Some things can't be settled any other way. I cannot begin to describe how she handled my case. The fierceness with which she defended me was indescribable. Again, I cannot thank her enough.

I got a traffic citation when traveling home from vacation. Cotten Law Firm handled my case for me so I didn’t have to travel 6 hours back to NC. Case was reduced to Improper Equipment. Could not have been more pleased! I called multiple times to check on things and was always greeted by a kind and helpful person on the other end of the phone. Highly recommend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
