After hiring four prior attorneys over seven years, I procured Attorney Morton's services. I hired her during the initial consultation with no hesitation. She represented me in both child custody and child support matters, garnering the best outcomes possible for my complex and high-conflict cases. Attorney Morton is exceptionally collaborative, competent, and strategic. A formidable attorney, I am happy that she was NOT the opposing counsel on my case. When you hire her and her team, you will find these words to be valid. We are very grateful for her legal prowess and offer the highest recommendation possible that I can make for a Family Attorney within the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill region. She saved my child's life and thus increased the quality of mine.

This attorney took my consultation money for a 20 minutes call, proposed a plan we will take to court, promised to get back to me but turned around and did not answer any emails or calls to her. Her assistant answered once and said she will get back. She waisted my time till when I was only 2 weeks away from my trial date before I knew they were crooks. All they care about is money, do not give them any consultation money for free please! I have all of our correspondence for anyone who needs it. I will report them to the Bar if need be.

My case was not a easy one by any means and Yasmin and her team were with me every step of the way. She worked endless hours, worked hard to get what was best for my childern, and never gave up even when things got tough. I could not have gotten through these last 25 months without her. She is knowledgeable and honest, even when it is not what you want to hear. She is always perpared and knows how to stand her position when other counsell tries to pull slick moves. If you are looking for an attorney who will fight for what is right for you and your childern then look no further, Yasmin is pationate about what she does and is presistent

This could be sooooo wordy- but I’m going to keep it brief. Ms. Motion came on originally as court appointed. The first day I met her was in court. I was totally unsure about her- until... Ms. Moron stood up and commanded the court room in a way that made me proud to even be- watching her. Pure inspiration. She got me through my cases. And I told myself that I was going to use her if I ever needed her. Well... let’s say I NEEDED her! Tehehehe! I was at the end of this awful custody battles that was bore in its war phase. Ms. Yasmin looked at me in my eyes the day that I retained her and said “..if I have to hold your hand to get your through this it’s going to get done!..” You see- I’m the nicest person that you’ll ever meet- except- when dealing with my children. And so I’m pretty cut throat and blunt with how I’m not about to play with anyone when it comes to them. Lol! She got wind of my reputation of being “strong willed” ; but, she got me... Ms. Yasmin could SEE me and unseating me. Because- one strong woman will always recognize another. She’s taught me a lot in our short time. She helped me bring my babies home! Agree seven long years of fighting.... You eased this suffering mothers heart. She pushed me. And I did it. Concord my fear and so now thanks to her.... I have my life back. Thank you too EVERYONE OF YOU! I must say her allowing me to be hands on really sealed the deal. I’m defiantly ready too begin this paralegal journey next year. I wish you so so much greatness! Again... Thank you!

I have retained Attorney Morton on a couple of occasions for my business. Each time, she has surpassed my expectations. Once, negotiating a contract buyout where I received double what I had ever imagined and again, helping me with a small claims matter and appeal where the magistrate got it wrong the first time.

I got a traffic citation when traveling home from vacation. Cotten Law Firm handled my case for me so I didn’t have to travel 6 hours back to NC. Case was reduced to Improper Equipment. Could not have been more pleased! I called multiple times to check on things and was always greeted by a kind and helpful person on the other end of the phone. Highly recommend!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
