I had an incredible experience with Jennifer Sinclair Simpkins as my attorney! I came to her after spending over five months with another lawyer who made no progress on my case. From the moment I consulted with Jennifer, I knew I was in the right hands. She’s incredibly smart, strategic, and doesn’t waste a second of your time. Jennifer is also realistic while being optimistic, without any of the extra “fluff”. She quickly assessed my situation, mapped out a clear plan, and took decisive action. What felt stagnant for months was resolved efficiently and effectively once she stepped in. I couldn’t be more impressed with her professionalism, sharpness, and ability to get things done. If you’re looking for an attorney who delivers results and truly has your back, I highly recommend Jennifer. Forever grateful for my experience with her!

During the most stressful time of my life to date, my attorney, Jennifer Sinclair Simpkins was nothing short of amazing! She listened to me, guided me through every step of the process, & she promptly returned my emails. I had so many questions that she patiently answered. Thank you, Jennifer for making this as painless as possible. Thank you for your professionalism and for fighting for me!

As someone who unfortunately has had to deal with 4-5 lawyers in the few years this was by far my absolute worst experience with any attorney/firm. Can’t recommend enough to get a different consult and get better advice, would never work with them again. The strategy here seems to be to take clients to court and to drag things out as long as possible to wrack up billable hours. From this from I paid over $10k for a divorce case that almost went to trial, until the firm was late on giving me needed disclosures to complete - when I changed attorneys almost instantly got the case out of court and saved a ton of money and got what I wanted. Attorneys here couldn’t seem to care less, they are arrogant and will give you bad informaron to keep your case going to trial. Total waste and huge regret wasting any time and money here.

Top review highlights

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable, experienced, and dedicated legal team that fights aggressively for their clients' best interests
“Heather and her team went far beyond my expectations and combed through hundreds of documents and a complex timeline that ultimately told an all too common story of how the family court system can be purposefully exploited at the expense of a father's right to be in their children's lives.”
2
Compassionate and supportive attorneys who provide personalized attention and guidance throughout the difficult divorce process
“Heather really listened to my story and worked diligently to ensure that the best interest of myself and my children were met. She completely exceeded my expectations.”
3
Highly responsive and accessible legal team, always available to answer questions and provide prompt updates
“Katelyn was great at explaining the process and patiently answered my many, many questions. She always focused on what would be best for me and my children without being aggressive or punitive to the other party.”
4
Impressive legal expertise and preparation, ensuring clients are well-represented in court
“When we finally had our day in court, Heather and her team went far beyond my expectations and combed through hundreds of documents and a complex timeline that ultimately told an all too common story of how the family court system can be purposefully exploited at the expense of a father's right to be in their children's lives.”
5
Firm's staff is described as friendly, caring, and dedicated to their clients' well-being
“The entire staff at RDL treated me with kindness and respect during the long divorce process.”
Cons
1
Concerns about the firm's billing practices, with some clients feeling that the firm "nickel and dimed" them or spent retainer funds without adequate justification
“I felt that the practice did nickel and dime me. For example, I believed during the custody process that negative mishaps with my ex, such as, verbal/emotional abuse, rashes, poor behavior with the children, prior DV, calling for "well checks" incessantly, filing false charges, harassing daycare, etc. would carry more weight in court and should be communicated to my attorney to leverage less time for him due to him not acting or behaving appropriately for the children. However, this was not the case.”
2
Perceived lack of experience or understanding of certain complex legal situations, such as out-of-state custody moves or military-related cases
“However, she doesn't seem to have experience with out of state custody moves/ military and many pieces of our standing agreement are unclear now that it is in play.”

Absolute Scam and Unprofessional Behavior Jeremy, I hired you to help with a bogus speeding ticket, where I have clear dash cam footage showing my speed, location, and the officer’s actions before and after the stop. The officer claimed I was going 80 in a 45, wrote the wrong location of the stop, and the speed limit on that road was actually 55. My speedometer was at 61, clearly shown on the dash cam. Yet, you had the nerve to tell me you could “maybe” reduce the ticket to a 14-over, despite knowing the entire ticket was a joke. After this ridiculous introduction, I called the very next day—over a month before the court date—and requested a refund. Your desk lady assured me I’d get a full refund. But today, I get a call telling me the case was continued (even though I fired you), and now you’re only offering half of my payment back because you “spent 20 minutes” on my case? That’s a load of crap. Then, to top it off you have the audacity to threaten me with legal action if I dispute this scam through my bank. You’re not even competent enough to handle a simple case like this and now you’re acting like a crook. I honestly feel bad for your firm that you’re so desperate for this money, but I’ll be sure to keep on sharing my experience the community. Keep the half—you clearly need it more than I do. Shameful.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  9. What challenges do you foresee in my case?
Understanding potential obstacles helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
