2
The attorneys provide personalized and compassionate service, genuinely caring about their clients and their well-being
“Heather and her team were the absolute best people to have in my corner during my extremely difficult and complicated divorce. Throughout this process I needed for things to be explained in detail and there were several times where I just needed to be calmed down. Heather and her team stepped up and talked me off of the ledge each and every time with nothing but care and kindness.”

“Heather held her ground, not being intimidated like my husband's first lawyer, and secured dates for when she returned from leave. As part of the discovery process, we learned that his ex and the lawyer had illegally taken copies of my husband's computers and phone.”
5
The firm provides a high level of preparation and attention to detail, which can make a significant difference in the case
“When it came to our permanent custody hearing I was nervous because I knew the odds were against me. That is until I saw Heather and an entire entourage of legal aids, assistant attorneys, and helping hands that were walking along side her. They were carrying multiple luggage sized carts with notebooks, legal textbooks, trial notebooks for each one of them, and everything else you could possibly imagine that would secure a victory. THEY WERE PREPARED!!!”

During the most stressful time of my life to date, my attorney, Jennifer Sinclair Simpkins was nothing short of amazing! She listened to me, guided me through every step of the process, & she promptly returned my emails. I had so many questions that she patiently answered. Thank you, Jennifer for making this as painless as possible. Thank you for your professionalism and for fighting for me!

As someone who unfortunately has had to deal with 4-5 lawyers in the few years this was by far my absolute worst experience with any attorney/firm. Can’t recommend enough to get a different consult and get better advice, would never work with them again. The strategy here seems to be to take clients to court and to drag things out as long as possible to wrack up billable hours. From this from I paid over $10k for a divorce case that almost went to trial, until the firm was late on giving me needed disclosures to complete - when I changed attorneys almost instantly got the case out of court and saved a ton of money and got what I wanted. Attorneys here couldn’t seem to care less, they are arrogant and will give you bad informaron to keep your case going to trial. Total waste and huge regret wasting any time and money here.

I would like to preface with my case is extremely convoluted in some areas. But as my case has gone on further without representation by Katelyn, the representation and "professional" advice I DID receive from her appears to have worsened and damaged an already difficult case that me and my current counsel are struggling to undo. Child custody case: -From the initial consultation, I was told she would only fight for 50/50 because there was really no hope in fighting for more. This wouldn't be an issue if I didn't receive confirmation from another lawyer who was appalled that she advised me that our *best case scenario* was a 50/50 custody arrangement. -Communication was relatively good. I never had an issue until the very end of having her as my counsel. I could have potentially missed the 2nd court date, or been unable to bring the witness she advised me to bring; she didn't let me know the date or time until a week prior, which caused me to have to take off work and find accommodations last minute. I won't even speak on the inconvenience it caused in my witness's schedule. -During the court room appearances, she advised me to be there, and both times we were not seen, which wouldn't be an issue if there wasn't extensive travel involved. The first time I was alone, the second time, she advised me to bring a witness under the impression that we were going to be heard that day. -During the 2nd court date, she sat in the pew in front of me and the witness, looked me dead in the eye, and told me settling for 50/50 was my only option. When speaking to current counsel, I have come to the conclusion that my case had solid arguments and I should have in no way just settled, and that this advice from Katelyn was due to her being unprepared to fight my case. She had 6-8 months between court dates. She was given every resource requested of me. In retrospect it appears to me she didn't have the confidence to fight for more, which is imperative in a case like mine. -In the private room where she made me read over the 50/50 consent order before signing, she and an intern spoke in normal tones regarding their Instagram profiles and gaining interactions/followers. It made it difficult to sit and read a document that essentially regarded the future life and happiness of a child. This felt extremely unprofessional and generally left a bad taste in my mouth on the drive home. All in all, I was highly dissatisfied and extremely upset with her. If your case is low-conflict, amiable, and all-in-all simple, she is a good fit for you. But she is not a fighter.

Several years ago, I needed to retain a lawyer. After a lot of research and interviews, I decided to go with Raleigh Divorce Law Firm and Katelyn Hodges as my attorney. Katelyn has been fantastic, and she was exactly what I needed over the years that I have retained her. Things haven't always gone my way with the multiple lawsuits and tumultuous experiences over the years, but with her keen legal knowledge, her ability to put forward logical arguments, and to capitalize on key pieces of information, she has been there when it was most important to achieve the desired end state.  Our very candid conversations about things have been helpful to me to make better decisions about legal issues and best support my family. I highly recommend Katelyn, and I am happy to call her a friend.

I got a traffic citation when traveling home from vacation. Cotten Law Firm handled my case for me so I didn’t have to travel 6 hours back to NC. Case was reduced to Improper Equipment. Could not have been more pleased! I called multiple times to check on things and was always greeted by a kind and helpful person on the other end of the phone. Highly recommend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
