I retained Ms. Heidi Bloom of Wyrick Robbins in late 2018 for a UCCJEA matter. Ms. Bloom failed to present either of the TWO court orders that proved my case and sent a junior attorney in her place without obtaining my consent or informing me ahead of time.

I am happy to attest that after 3 long years in a very high conflict divorce, Heidi Bloom came through for me financially in an manner that greatly exceeded my expectations. I live in Pinehurst NC and had to turn to Raleigh to find an attorney who was willing to tackle a case involving a high profile physician in our community. There were no issues of child custody, but a great deal of financial issues to unravel. The length of time it took to resolve my issue was more of a reflection of my spouse's legal stalling than Heidi's efforts. I truly appreciated her advice, total (brutal) honesty , and expertise. I can understand why some clients might think that attorneys are too harsh and uncaring. Everyone arrives with differing sets of circumstances. Attorneys are not your therapists, and you are paying them to navigate you to the best outcome given your situation. . Heidi was amazing in her timing of filing items which greatly benefitted my case. She is extremely busy, but her paralegals always helped when I needed to pass information along. I felt that she did as much as she could to ensure that I wasn't paying too much for outside experts to analyze business entities. Heidi's presence in the courtroom is impressive. She's professional, yet unrelenting in Mediation . It's evident that she is respected by her peers. As a professional woman myself, I respected her efforts to get me to focus (divorces bring out the crazy in all of us). Besides being a great attorney, she is a very nice person who takes your case very seriously. My Alimony and Equitable Distribution documents were signed in court yesterday. I am still thrilled at what Heidi accomplished for me. I have and will continue to highly recommend her to anyone in a divorce situation.

I have probably one of the most complicated divorces and custody situations imaginable which has dragged on for a long time due to my own mistakes. Heidi is extremely professional, an incredible memory and a fantastic understanding of the law. She is a very caring person and she can tell you her opinion but has always been very diligent to work for what I wanted not her. She has a very kind heart but she is completely unabashed in telling you the cold hard truth whether you are ready to hear it or not. I have been angry with her and argued with her before thanking her for helping me see what I wasn't. I have been exposed to many opposing lawyers in my case and Heidi is the only one who really displays integrity and honesty. She plays hard but fairly. She isn't out for dramatics and she believes in settling things out of court if possible but not afraid to fight. In the courtroom is where she is extremely effective, articulate and passionate. I believe that her complete honest conviction and how she expressed it made the difference in my custody case. She is very organized in her thoughts and makes very rational arguments. She cares a lot about what she does and her reputation for honesty and being a straight shooter matters a lot - judges know which lawyers are serious and which are histrionic clowns. She has always been sure I was honest in what I say and works hard to develop the best strategies possible. It is a big firm. Heidi isn't always the best at returning calls sometimes. Sometimes you have to call twice or maybe three times. But at the times when time mattered, it was always the first time or she had already called me. With every experience I had- and seeing how bad the legal system is, how slimy the other attorneys are- I am very proud to have worked with someone of Heidi's character and someone I respect a great deal as a person and a lawyer.

Worst lawyer EVER! Beware. Heidi talks a big strategy, IE she will legally harass the defendant to get them to acquiesce. She will threaten to drop your case at the 11th. hour, if you attempt to express any polite and respectful displeasure with her failure to follow through or handle issues in a timely manner. Painfully slow response time, if at all. If you politely inquire on your case status, she will become rude and threatening and resort to dishonesty by claiming not to have received important time sensitive correspondence . Another tactic was the ruse that she sent replies that mysteriously never arrived. Purportedly messages ended up in this large firms spam and trash filters with no explanation as to why or how they got there . In return for lots of $$$ and a lot of hard work on my part providing the facts and information needed to get the results she indicated she could get, she was totally ineffectual, frustrating, aggravating and added exponentially to the stress of the case she was entrusted with. Over a period of months, she was totally unsuccessful in getting even ONE deposition from the defendants or any witnesses. They played her and out-smarted her at every turn, making her seem slow, easily manipulated, unprepared, ineffective and incompetent. Needless to say, after spending tens of thousands of dollars, she got absolutely zero results. The frustration, stress, aggravation and plain meanness Heidi caused was immeasurable. It doesn't seem quite fair when an nonobjective lawyer with his own goals comes along and writes a nice review to offset unfavorable reviews and bump the score up... There should be separate categories for reviews by clients and reviews/endorsements by other lawyers: colleagues, lawyer relatives and lawyer friends.

Do not hire this lawyer!!! It's a big firm and your case will be treated with little attention and given to lawyers with less experience to work in the background. You will pay a premium price and receive below average service. Good luck getting Heidi to return a phone call or email and good luck getting an honest answer from her as well. A lawyer through and through with little interest in anything other than your money!! I got sucked in by the big office and great bio on her website, so learn from my mistake and look elsewhere for effective representation.

I got a traffic citation when traveling home from vacation. Cotten Law Firm handled my case for me so I didn’t have to travel 6 hours back to NC. Case was reduced to Improper Equipment. Could not have been more pleased! I called multiple times to check on things and was always greeted by a kind and helpful person on the other end of the phone. Highly recommend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
