The law firm of Watsi M. Sutton is a compassionate company that really cares about you, your family and the legal issues that you present to them. Watsi and her staff are excellent listeners and exceptional communicators. Some legal matters span multiple years and it will clearly show if your selected law firm loses interest and enthusiasm for your case the longer that it takes to fully resolve it. I can honestly attest that Watsi and her firm will maintain a very high level of dedication for all your legal issues no matter how long it takes. Team Watsi will be by your side every step along the way! Watsi and her staff will not leave you and your family standing alone once you retain their services. Watsi and her team will continue to work extremely diligently towards full resolution of all legal matters presented to them. I have full confidence in the expert abilities of Watsi M. Sutton and her dedicated team!

My son received his first (better be his last) moving violation for speeding. Being that neither one of us is from the area I had to search out a decent lawyer whom we could trust. Technology allowed me to successfully conduct the business with the firm.

Watsi defended very successfully my speeding ticket in Tyrell County, I ended up with just a fine and her fee was the most competitive. Very good service and the result was better than what was announced. Thank you !

Attorney Sutton is EXCELLENT! I was charged by District Attorney Seth Edwards with obtaining property under false pretense when my former employer noted a charge made on the employer’s credit card that I was completely unaware of until after being indicted by a grand jury. I was arrested in Missouri, about to be extradited back to NC, until Attorney Sutton arrived on the scene. She was able to have my bond reduced from $75000 to $5000 and I was released and was able to travel on my own recognizance to NC to appear in court. I must mention that when I showed up in Washington County, the deputies (one of which recognized me from him working with the local schools) tried to arrest me again unsuccessfully because of Attorney Sutton. I returned the card to my former employer but did not realize the card information remained on my PriceLine account when I made travel reservations when charging what I thought was my own personal credit card. Because I pay my card off at the end of the month, I had few charges on my card that month and paid all the charges in full, not realizing the minimal charge was not on my card. After my arrest and release--thanks to Attorney Sutton, I was able to better understand what and why I was charged. I did not know the details of the charges until after my release from jail. I was arrested on August 16, 2017, remained all day on the 17th and released on the 18th. Attorney Sutton and I discussed the details after my release. She did a THOROUGH job on my case and did an investigation of my Priceline account and the charges made on the district's card back in January 2017. She uncovered where the district's card they issued me was still active, and it auto populated when I clicked on their card thinking it was mine. I did not realize their card remained in my Priceline profile. I deleted their information from my profile. I was able to make proper reimbursement of the nominal travel charges soon after learning the details as it was never my intent that this would happen. I am grateful that Attorney Watsi Sutton proved my innocence. After presenting these finding to the DA, all charges were dropped. I was cleared as I knew all along as I would never do such a thing intentionally. I don't worry about the public scrutiny as there was much, I rest in my faith in Jesus Christ and knowing that HE knew my intent all along. Thank you Attorney Sutton for your skilled and precise legal mind and your tenacity in making my case and my liberty a priority. I recommend you to anyone needing help in your field of preparation. You represented UNC Chapel Hill Law School, and more importantly Jesus Christ, Well! Great is your reward!

My son got a traffic ticket which had to be resolved before he could leave for military boot camp in several weeks. If the ticket could not be closed quick enough he would be discharged from enlistment. Inner Banks Legal was very sympathetic to the timeliness to this request. They stayed in communication throughout the process, and even got the ticket reduced and closed ahead of expectations. My family is very grateful to the team at Inner Banks Legal.

Mrs. Gaskins represented me in divorce and child custody. She fought hard for me and I walked away with full custody and the freedom I had been searching for. I actually ran across this website as I am in search of her expertise once more.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Washington, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
