After getting a settlement offer from a serious car accident and accepting, I lost all communication with Mr Gaskins for two weeks. I talked with my local police department and they told me I was rightfully concerned and offered to call them for me. Two days later I got my settlement check. When they finally called me they acted like nothing happened and that they were ready to send me the check. No apology for lack of communication, nothing. Definitely doesn't seem like a professional law firm.

This lawyer told me he could represent me and asked me to attend a 4-hour course before he did so. I took the course and sent his secretary verification of this. She verified she received it and I have the email record to prove so. I never heard from them again. No invoice or any other contact from the lawyer. Months later, I received a document in the mail telling me that I didn't show up for my court date and that my license was going to be revoked as a result. When I got in touch with Herman about this, he immediately became very belligerent, telling me that, despite the email record that I have of his secretary telling me that she had received my document, he had never received any contact or money from me. I asked how I could send him money if I hadn't received anything in the way of an invoice and he told me to go find another lawyer. I wasted 4 hours of my time in the aforementioned course and I'm now losing my license because of this man.

I met with Herman for a consultation and afterwards,, he told me he would not be back in the office for 2+ weeks. Therefore, being smart and having options was the best thing for me. I had already told him that he was my primary choice and, of course he loved that. 5 days after the consultation I went to get my papers back because I was advised to look at other lawyers for a backup. Needless to say that the secretary DID NOT want to give me my important papers back pertaining to my case and I had to explain to her that I was advised to explore ALL options. After deciding Herman was definitely the lawyer I was looking for, I called him back and politely asked for another meeting. He declined, in a very rude manner I might add, and said he did not want to represent me. He would not tell me why but after talking to colleagues of his, they explained to me the reason why he refused to represent me. The reason every one of them have me, was because I insulted his EGO. This is absolutely absurd for a professional lawyer with the so called "credentials" he supposedly has. Just because I am intelligent and wanted to explore all options and went to get my papers back, he had refused to represent me. I would advise anyone looking for Herman Gaskins P.A to represent you, to think twice, if not three times about your decision. I've been told by many, and when I say many, I mean at least ten lawyers and there consults that his ego and money is the only thing he cares about. He doesn't care about you or your case. He cares about money and his well-being. To be honest, it was the worst consultation I had out of four different lawyers and he seemed like he could care less about the outcome of my trial. So in closing, I would recommend that everyone seek counsel from others because of these reasons. When I met with him he seemed money-hungry, ego-eccentric, and was plain rude. Do not let the dumb and meaningless "this old tractor" commercials fool you. He genuinely does not have a heart and I would DARE to call him a Christian man that "cares about you." Please read this and take my advice. He's rude and seems to not have a heart at all. Think about this before you choose him.

Mr. Gaskins represented me in a very complicated personal injury case several years ago. We not only argued the case multiple times in Superior Court, we went on to the NC Appeals court several time and then on the the NC Supreme court. Mr. Gaskins was very professional in every aspect of this case , thus winning it the highest court in our state. If not for his diligence this would not have been the outcome. I highly regard Mr. Gaskins as one of NC finest attorneys.

My son got a traffic ticket which had to be resolved before he could leave for military boot camp in several weeks. If the ticket could not be closed quick enough he would be discharged from enlistment. Inner Banks Legal was very sympathetic to the timeliness to this request. They stayed in communication throughout the process, and even got the ticket reduced and closed ahead of expectations. My family is very grateful to the team at Inner Banks Legal.

Mrs. Gaskins represented me in divorce and child custody. She fought hard for me and I walked away with full custody and the freedom I had been searching for. I actually ran across this website as I am in search of her expertise once more.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Washington, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
