I first met Dawn a few months ago. My case involves separation, child custody, and soon to be divorce. After first reviewing my case she hit the ground running. She informed me of all my options and remained flexible while I made my decision on what course I wanted to take. Even when the opposing counsel attempted to claim constitutional grievances against me, she remained calm and professional. She cited how the opposing counsel was incorrect in their allegations and the judge had grievances thrown out. While Dawn has not been practicing law for several years, she has the knowledge of an attorney who has been practicing for over 20. Along with her vast knowledge, she has the passion and drive of a junior lawyer who thrives on success. You can see that she truly cares about your case and will work very hard to obtain the best possible outcome. She is a true professional and respects the attorney/client relationship. However, you do not get that feeling that it is just about the exchange money like you get with other lawyers. It almost feels like a friendship with you both working to the common goal. I would highly recommend her to handle any case that someone might have.

Ms. Oxendine was very good at hearing me out then giving me options. She was always willing to help even on off lawyer topics! I was very pleased with the out come of our case and her professionalism in dealing with the "system". I could not have gone through this without her both professional and personally. A lawyer with a heart go figure!! You would do well to hire such a professional lawyer and wonderful person!

Cynthia is the attorney you want on your side. She is knowledgeable on many different levels of family law and will walk you through the steps of the process. She is quite impressive I must say! When our court date arrived, she was like a firecracker and didn’t miss a beat! Cynthia’s confidence and knowledge was very apparent. I highly recommend this attorney for any child custody/child support cases. Although my case was several years ago, if I were to be placed in a similar situation again, there would be no hesitation on my end to contact Cynthia Locklear immediately! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cynthia Locklear is an amazing attorney, a true professional. Cindy is smart, very knowledgable, thoughtful and is not afraid to speak the truth. Cindy provides great results, solves issues quickly and is also someone who will fight for you. Cindy listened to my story, understood where I was coming from and outlined my options based on her extensive background. Cindy walked me through the process from start to finish, made me feel like I was not alone and that she would be there for me step by step. I have 1 small child and it was comforting to know that we would be taken care of and she would fight for us. I did not end up moving forward, instead we continued on with couples counseling, but if I ever find myself in need I would not hesitate to contact Cindy again. I know many others that have hired her as well and you will be extremely happy with her services- as she is the best family law attorney in the Wilmington area. I highly recommend Cynthia Locklear

I had a very difficult case considering the father was not willing to negotiate anything. Janet and Waneta jumped right in and did what they do. I’m a very angry person due to the situation and they were able to keep me focused on the big picture. The ladies in this office are the bomb and I would hire them again in a skinny minute.

Janet and her team did a wonderful job with my case. Every issue and question was addressed and handled both quickly and thoroughly. She went above and beyond to keep me informed with the latest information regarding my case and was extremely helpful and prepared for my hearing. My wife and I were able to get full custody of my daughter and all of the provisions asked for in my court order were granted. Janet goes above and beyond for all of her clients and made sure that I knew my case and outcome was important to her. Janet and her team were hands down the best and most professional attorneys I have worked with and I highly recommend them to anyone who is going through a divorce, domestic issue, or any other civil issues.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Wilmington, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
