Pros
1
Excellent and knowledgeable representation, with attorneys who are dedicated to getting the best possible outcomes for their veteran clients
“Brendan Garcia is the absolute best! If you're a veteran and tired of fighting with the VA for your entitled benefits and getting nothing. I highly suggest you let him take on the fight for you!”
2
Responsive, communicative, and provides regular updates throughout the legal process
“VetLaw was very helpful in assisting my father navigate the paperwork and details required to have a success suit. Emily was his point of contact and she was very kind and thorough.”
3
Achieves successful results, such as increased disability ratings and back pay, that exceed client expectations
“VetLaw has gone above and beyond my expectations. Mr. Garcia has raised my disability rating to 100 percent and I don't have to worry about bills anymore!”
4
Cares about veterans and is passionate about honoring their service by helping them obtain the benefits they deserve
“Brendan is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving four years on active duty between 1999 and 2003. He served on two deployments in the Middle East, and has since dedicated his time to serving veterans who have been unable to receive the help they need.”
5
Provides excellent customer service and a positive overall experience for clients
“I am so grateful for the help of VetLaw. Their communication was fantastic and they were able to get me where I needed to be. Will absolutely use them again in the future. Highly recommend.”
Cons
1
Some clients have reported poor communication and lack of responsiveness from the firm, particularly during the intake process
“They will not take on difficult cases that take some digging. They will not listen to what is being conveyed. There is no empathy, want to help, no compassion or understanding.”
2
A few clients felt the firm was only interested in taking on cases that would be the most profitable, rather than focusing on the needs of all veterans
“They only take on easy cases. My husband was in USMC and has been fighting for his VA for 7 years. With no help from the VA and half his record black out. He has records and meds with Dr records and deployment. After doing the phone interview, We receive an email (no phone call) saying they can not take his case.”

Doug and Dayna were great, they were tenacious about doing their job with care and respect towards me and did everything they possibly could to make sure I was taken care of now and in the future. I appreciate the honesty and forthcoming of Doug letting me know what could negatively happen and the positives that could come. I recommend these law offices because I believe you will get the truth and best they can do for you. Thanks again Dayna and Doug

My first experience with a lawsuit was made more than bearable with John Chilson and Jarod Koenig as counsel. They made my case personal and not just a business transaction. If I could do it over, I would choose Comerford, Chilson & Moser every single time!!

We chose Comerford Chilson & Moser law firm because they were recommended by a highly reputable attorney in our area. We not only found them to be the most knowledgeable, diligent, and professional law firm, we found them to be caring, concerned, and sympathetic to what our family had experienced. They led us through the entire legal process with ease and we had a better outcome than we could have imagined. John Chilson and Jared Koenig became like family during our time with them. Comerford, Chilson, and Moser's reputation for excellence is well-known among opposing legal teams."

This is the only experience with a lawyer I have ever had and I cant imagine having a more knowledgeable and caring attorney then JK Moser When our legal journey started I was not sure if we had a case. I just wanted someone to talk to and its seemed like a lot of the other law offices I called did not want to talk, just for me to submit an email to them to review. That changed when I contacted Comerford Chilson and Moser. My attorney ended up being JK Moser and that was truly a blessing. Despite it not being an ideal circumstance for my family, JK over the course of our case worked tirelessly for me, my wife, and children. JK kept us constantly updated with what was going on with our case. He always made me feel like he was not only fighting for the best resolution for my children and I, but also to preserve the legacy of my wife. If you are looking for an attorney to represent you or a loved one then I can’t think of better hands for you to be in.

I first met Barbara Raffaldini when we were colleagues at a large Chicago law firm. We have been friends ever since. When I, my clients, associates and family members have needed counsel to handle a real estate matter, I have referred them to Barb because Barb gets the deal done. She is the master of the checklist so no detail gets lost or forgotten. She has worked on matters when the seller's attorney has been ill-prepared or sloppy and has taken the initiative to clean up what threatened closing on time. She handles large, multiparty transactions with skill, efficiency and tact. While I was in house counsel at a hospitality industry business, Barb handled sales, purchases, and some aspects of financing of several different properties. She made me look good because there were no hiccups. Since that time, she has handled matters large and small for people I referred to her. The real measure of her skill is how clients feel about the work she does--one word--confident. Confident that things were done to achieve business objectives, correctly, and without unnecessary expense or stress. Because it is my credibility that is on the line when I make a referral, I refer work to Barbara Raffaldini.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Winston-Salem, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
