Thank you for assisting me in being granted and awarded SMC I was previously denied. This was a 3-year battle with the VA that led to an appeal that was granted. Thank you Vet Law and Ms. Rhonda Green.

Pros
1
The lawyer is professional, knowledgeable, and effective in handling various legal matters such as VA disability claims, family law issues, and estate planning
“Brendan Garcia of VetLaw did an amazing job to get me my VA benefits! VetLaw is a Five Star law service. Thank you for all the wonderful help.”
2
The lawyer provides excellent customer service, communicates well, and genuinely cares about the client's needs
“Jasmine was a wonderful lawyer when it came time to file for child custody. She was thorough and personal, always keeping me in the know about what is going on and what is going to happen.”
3
The lawyer goes above and beyond for their clients, even assisting with tasks outside the scope of the legal matter
“She made me feel comfortable with her expertise in family law and continues to exemplify superior customer service. She goes above and beyond what I have expected in an attorney by occasionally checking on me just to see how I am doing in this stressful time.”
4
The lawyer is responsive, keeps the client informed, and ensures a smooth and successful legal process
“VetLaw, Teresa Ramos, represented my case following another law firm's decision to no longer represent me. I was extremely pleased with the speed and efficiency of the settlement provided by the VetLaw team.”
5
The lawyer is trustworthy, reliable, and advocates strongly for their clients
“Jasmine is awesome! She is professional, understanding, and personable. I needed help with my divorce and she did everything in her power to get it done in a timely matter (including hiring a PI to locate my ex). I wish I would've hired her from the beginning.”
Cons
1
The lawyer may not be responsive or attentive to the client's needs, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction
“Phone calls, text and emails went unanswered for WEEKS. The night before my trial she called me to have a pre-trial meeting. The meeting lasted 30 minutes. The next day in court the trial never happened because the attorney I hired (Jasmine) was not prepared.”
2
The lawyer may not be as effective or dedicated as expected, resulting in poor outcomes or unresolved cases
“If you are in need of a lawyer look else where anyone is better. She lies, she doesn't put up a fight in court, then gets scared when she feels she can't win. After dealing with multiple inconveniences that weren't on my part. If your need of someone willing to get you through a difficult situation I would look elsewhere.”

I highly recommend attorney Nate Harris for estate, will, and trust preparation. He is knowledgeable, personable, and extremely patient. His explanations were simple and he allowed time for my husband and me to talk through our preferences. I especially appreciated that he provided an advanced planning worksheet so that our in-person meeting was not too long. When we finished, we had originals and copies neatly organized. Our experience with Nate was excellent!

Mr. Harris was a great help to me as I recently made a will and advancedirective. He was able to advise me and my spouse with our specific situation. Every family is unique and it is necessary to have an attorney that can explain different situations that may occur upon sickness, end of life, and death. I recently lost both of my parents and because of their advance directives and will it allowed me to not feel guilty at the end of their life. I was able to carry out their wishes and not feel guilty or unsure. This was actually a gift to me. It has allowed me to know I made the right decisions for them. Mr. Harris was able to help me create my will and advanced directive so that my family will know in advance my wishes. I feel a great sense of relief now that I have this information and at any point can contact Mr. Harris for changes to both of these important documents. Mr. Harris is very personable and knowledgable, also easy to talk with about estate planning. I would recommend him for legal advice pertaining to this matter!

I had the opportunity to work with Kevin after my parents' fatal auto accident with a semi-truck. Kevin worked with all those affected (not just as an attorney, but also as a sounding board at times), and kept us all up-to-date as the lawsuit progressed. He worked with the insurance company for the trucking line, my parents' insurance company, traveled to interview all the parties involved, and was always there to answer any questions we had no matter how trivial we felt they might have been. I would highly recommend Kevin to anyone looking for a quality attorney who will provide you with honest (both good and bad) answers, and fight for your best interests.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Winston-Salem, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
