I was referred to Jon Kurtz by my estate attorney. Jon enlisted partner Elise Whitley for perspective and backup. While no one enjoys a divorce, Jon and Elise made it understandable for me, a first timer. As we worked through the process, I gained confidence in their knowledge and capabilities. While researching divorce opinions, I found case law that Jon had argued (successfully). Good to have that experience in your corner. Not to mention an adjunct professor at Wake Forest and a Legal Elite. We were stymied by foot-dragging opposing counsel, and the added burden of ending Covid, but Jon keep the momentum going, with steady reminders and requests for responses, getting commitments. Ultimately we did get a settlement I felt was reasonable. My take-away is that the Kurtz firm brings a sense of dignity and respect for the law, exceptional experience and knowledge, and the competency needed for successful family practice. I have no hesitation recommending Jon and company, without question one will receive services of the highest order.

After finding myself in active addiction, I had made some poor decisions and found myself in legal issues. Therefore I wanted a better life and sought treatment. My largest challenge was felony and misdemeanor charges for my questionable behavior. I learned of Kerri’s hardworking efforts in the addiction arena through her advocation of the drug court in Forsyth county. A person assisting me with my recovery directed me to her. She listened with a caring ear and passed no judgement on me. She understood my bad decisions were motivated by my addiction. She represented me to the court as a human being that was seeking assistance to be the great person I was intended to be. She understood their were consequences for my actions and pled to the court that my consequences would be proactive, effective, and assistive in me bettering myself. Her explanation of my character and the person I truly am encouraged the court to hand down a lesser charge and lesser sentence. Understanding the length of time it takes to recover from active addiction she went one step further. She pleaded to the court and recommended that part of my consequences for my behavior would be to be legally responsible to complete my treatment program. I had never had the experience of an attorney treating me as a human being and expressing my value as a person to the court. The fact that she went above and beyond and recommended to the court to hold me legally responsible to complete my treatment demonstrated to me that she really cared about me. This was but a glimpse although a large hurdle of one of the challenges I faced in my early active recovery. Kerri’s action and compassion have assisted me in being a person in long term recovery. Ms. Sigler is not just an attorney she is a humanitarian. To this day she still reaches out to me after the case has been closed and I have completed my legal obligations. I would only pray that other representatives of the legal system follow her lead. My gratitude and thankfulness could never be expressed enough. Thank you Kerri.

As a person that had never been into a courtroom, Kerri Sigler helped me immediately adjust to the atmosphere. Her confidence spilled over into me making each courtroom visit easier. She always responded to my messages during the process. She was firm and straightforward with me. I knew what she expected of me as her client and she took the time to listen to me. There was no guessing or trying to figure out what kind of lawyer I had, she is the best and I knew that from the start. I never had to search or make phone calls to her on court days as I had seen other people do. She was always present when my case became before the court. She was always prepared and new what was important. I couldn't help but notice her mingling with the other Attorneys in the courtroom. Kerri Sigler is well respected amongst her counterparts. I would recommend her to everyone. I could not have had a better Lawyer representing me. If it had not been for Kerri, my first courtroom experience could have been more intimidating and I may not even have won my case. Thanks to her I have not only the victory but confidence that I will take forth from this life experience. I am forever greatful to Kerri Sigler.

Kerri was assigned to my 50B case and immediately contacted me to get the specifics directly from me. She was a huge support through three continuances and finally a fourth and final showing. I couldn't have asked for a more dedicated attorney if I had picked one myself. I highly recommend contacting her if you are in the need for an attorney in the areas of her expertise. I can not say enough about how her confidence calmed my nerves through one of the worst experiences of my life.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Winston-Salem, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
