From the day I contacted Ashley, she was there to help and give me advice/guidance. Not only did Ashley fight for me, it felt like she put herself in my shoes, to have a full understanding of what I was going through. It was a tough, ongoing battle and not once did Ashley back down. She stuck to her guns and made sure I was staying as positive as I could be. I am so grateful I contacted Ashley and that she took my case. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

As we go through life, things change! I had the pleasure of consulting and hiring Ashley to handle my divorce. Hearing all the horror stories about divorces in my life. Really fully understanding the papers I had been served! Because every case is different To protect my own interests, I retained Ashley! I will I admit I was nervous and a bit uncomfortable, but Ashley walked me through with my situation with an unbiased opinion discussing the pros and cons. With the information that Ashley provided me we were able to come up with the best solutions that were in my best interest as well as the requests from the opposing attorney. Ashley passionately puts her clients first, as well as there best interest! I would give Ashley a 5 star rating and would suggest you using Ashley for any misfortune or legal matter that may occur in your life! Jason

Ashley was a very professional and caring lawyer. Nothing about this process is easy or fun, but she made it as simple as it could be for me. She was honest and understanding of my personal situation, and gave feedback consistently on how things should be handled. When she was unavailable, she made sure that another member of the team would be readily available for me. I would highly recommend Ashley.

I think everyone has 20/20 vision when looking back on their divorce. Things you should have done differently or things you wish you had thought about more clearly. While I absolutely have some of that, I know that if I hadn’t had Ashley to represent me, it would be much, much more. There were multiple times in the process that I was willing to settle for terms which would have actually left me and my children is a very rough financial situation. I’m so thankful that my attorney wouldn’t allow me to. Ashley was firm and patient while I came to terms with the fact that I couldn’t simply support my children by working three jobs. She was steadfast in pushing back when I was being unrealistic about my own abilities to support a family of three on my own meager income. Ashley was clear about what the law allows and what it doesn’t. She was realistic about what it would cost me to live outside my marriage. She was understanding and compassionate while regularly kicking me in the proverbial pants. To be honest, there were times when it felt as if she was part therapist and part attorney. Times she seemed like a friend fighting for the things I was too weak or afraid to ask for, but really, truly actually needed. I’m so grateful for the work she did for me. While no one gets everything they might want in a divorce, because of Ashley’s willingness to stand up for me, I did get the things I need.

I have worked with Fremstad Law since 2011. Both personally and professionally. They have our best interest at heart. They listen to our needs and concerns. They try to direct us to the least expensive solution to solve our needs. They are not just racking up time for a big bill. I've learned a lot from working with them. I'd highly recommend setting up a meeting for a free consult. Actions speak louder than words, let them earn your business the way they earned mine.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fargo, North Dakota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
