After dealing with 8 other incompetent attorney's, I trusted Brian Skidmore with getting a complex foreclosure case dismissed. He was able to accomplish in 2 weeks, what my previous attorney was unable to do in 9 months. He did not talk down to me, as other's did. He explained everything very well, was quick to return phone calls, emails, questions etc. He was kind, efficient, & his expertise was apparent. I highly recommend his services. Thanks to Brian, my mother's 1969 home was saved from an illegal foreclosure in the nick of time. We are so thankful!

I retained Brian after a previous general practice lawyer had destroyed my case with improper/poorly timed filings and insufficient pleadings. The last thing I wanted to do was switch lawyers in the middle of a case but I had no choice, I had no trust/faith. Brian Skidmore was able to flip my case around and get me to an end result that I was happy to live with. REASONS WHY TO USE BRIAN: When this guy starts a case he goes ‘full throttle’ This lawyer will do everything he can to always have an upper hand. He takes the extra step to know every fine detail and weighs every possible option. Possibly his best characteristic is that I truly believe he cares about his clients, you’re not just a number and a paycheck. It’s difficult to find people passionate about their career but when it comes to a real estate lawyer, do yourselves a favor and retain this one.

Brian was awesome to work with and his professionalism was top notch. As we worked together to resolve the matter of a property controversy. I experienced how he easily handled the fumbling, easily confused, person that attempted to be challenging to work with. Brian would professional get the person back on track and move the matter forward to agreeable resolution. Great job!

We hired Brian Skidmore to represent us in a home construction project case. After discovering several serious construction defects, we fired the builder (general contractor) and Brian filed the case. Brian quickly reviewed our case, explained to us the complexity of our claim and a course of action. After an unfavorable ruling on a procedural matter, Brian was convinced that the arbitration clause in our construction contract could be defeated. He promptly filed an appeal with the Ninth District Court which remanded the case back to the trial court for an additional hearing. Ultimately, the issue was resolved in our favor and the case proceeded in Common Pleas Court. Brian hired expert witnesses to solidify our case. He negotiated an agreement by all parties to combine this case with a second case that a subcontractor filed. He added additional subcontractor defendants to the case. Ultimately, with his help and guidance, the case was settled after a long mediation process. We felt that Brian was always representing our best interests. He promptly returned our calls and kept us well informed of the progress of the case. He was well prepared for hearings, depositions and mediation. We highly recommend Brian and his firm.

Almost 2 years ago my husband and I had hired a big box DIY chain to install new flooring in our home. The job was never completed and the workmenship was very poor. I tried dealing with the installer, as well as the store, but after 18 months no progress had been made. I called Brian at the end of July 2018 and within two months He was able to bring a resolution that both my husband and I were very happy with. During every interaction with Brian I found him to be knowledgeable and respectful . He was very prompt at returning calls/e-mails and answering questions. I am very appreciative to Brian for facilitating a resolution to our issue and would recommend his services.

Rob Horton was very helpful with this whole process! He helped me understand everything that a first time accident victim can expect from the insurance company and the advantages of being represented by a solid law firm. Not just any law firm - Slater & Zurz - is the first name in personal injury in Canton, Ohio. He and James Luna, who was available 24 hours a day, kept me informed and I'm very thankful for their help. They really mean it when they say We Get Results!

My experience with Chester Law has been outstanding. I have experienced professionalism that I haven't seen in my 46yrs of life. My attorney and his legal aide have answered all of my questions and even some I didn't know to ask. I would have my own mother retain this firm for their legal expertise, because I know she would be treated with a sense of compassion you seldom see in this world.

“I have worked with Jim in a variety of cases, most when I was an attorney who referred work to Jim and, once when I myself was injured. In every case, Slater & Zurz treated us with respect, were responsive, and served us well to get all compensation we were entitled to.”

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Akron, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
