Cons

2
Delays in handling legal matters after a client's passing
“After my father passed away my mom had to get all their accounts switched in her name. Tom has been great at answering all her questions and helping her get through it during a difficult time.”

We bought a full package of Trusts, Wills and POAs 6 years ago. Cooper, Adel, Vu and Associates not only delivered those documents timely and fully explained with the modifications specific to our needs, but they continue to support us with periodic changes to some documents as we incur changes to our status. They always quickly and thoroughly answer the occasional questions we have, no matter how detailed. They continue to be both professional and friendly in all their support of us through the years. I'm confident our beneficiaries will have this same level of support when they need it.

I have known Garrett for over 17 years and have utilized his legal skills many times. He drew up my wife and my wills, upon the birth of our first child. He has helped me with the formation of two LLC businesses. He has provided counsel, not only on the legal technicalities, but also on a personal level. He asks the tough questions and has helped me think through aspects from an unbiased perspective. However, the most appreciated service Garrett has provided was the settlement of my mother's estate. My family accepted my recommendation that we work with Garrett through the estate settlement process. The first portion of our first meeting with Garrett at his office was spent with him focusing on my Dad and really getting to know him and find out how he was coping with the loss of Mom. The compassion he showed to a man he had never met made quite an impression on the entire family. Since then, both my sisters have utilized his services for various legal matters, related to their personal estates. I would and have highly recommended Garrett to many people.

I wanted to thank Cooper, Adel, Vu & Associates for helping me with my mother’s estate, my business, and my career. My mother passed away several weeks ago, and the advice and work that they did helped protect her assets, giving my family comfort. I am an artist and Cooper, Adel, Vu & Associates has helped protect my assets and home with my Trust. Many years ago a client art collector recommended to me that I set up a Trust to protect my artwork and other assets. For more than 10 years I inquired and spoke with a number of Trust Attorneys and never felt they could accommodate my special needs. In the fall of 2020, I saw an internet advertisement for the Cooper, Adel, Vu & Associates seminar about Trust and estate planning. I went to the seminar and Thom Cooper was the speaker. Thom’s lecture answered many questions I had about having a Trust. I felt that Cooper, Adel, Vu & Associates could be the firm that could help me. I made an appointment in January of 2021 and took my mother and sister to ask questions. The difference between Cooper, Adel, Vu & Associates, and the other firms that I approached to create my Trust was, that Thom asked the HARD questions. Questions associated with my career, my business, my assets, and my family. I was impressed with their insight into my unique circumstances. After that first meeting, I felt a sense of relief that my future was more secure. Ted Brown and his team handled the construction of my Trust. His work was very efficient, timely, and accommodated multiple follow-up additions to my Trust. He was also a good teacher explaining, why and how, my assets would be protected from multiple circumstances. I am very appreciative for their great work, creating my Trust. I would recommend Cooper, Adel, Vu & Associates to anyone who needs to protect their assets. Their work has created a sense of well-being for me. Thank you so much Cooper, Adel, Vu & Associates.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Centerburg, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
