Pros
1
Responsive and Accessible Communication
“I found that regardless of the questions that came up in my case - Mark, or one of his associates, always had an answer for me promptly. I could always get a hold of them and know what was going on in my case.”
2
Excellent Customer Service
“It is so refreshing to be treated with respect and with a high level of customer service. The Godbey staff treated me with high regard. They never left me waiting for them to show up to our appointments. They didn't make me feel rushed as they answered all of my questions. They made sure I felt comfortable with everything before moving forward.”
3
Reliable and Competent Legal Representation
“Mr. Godbey has represented my family members for more than 15 year on a number of matters including probate, real estate negotiations, estate planning, tenant eviction representation, city building condemnation and sadly in once case criminal traffic (not me-lol). In all situations he resolved them with stellar results and excellent client service.”
Cons
1
Poor Handling of a Case
“He wasted our 4 months discovery period by doing almost nothing. He did an inaccurate analysis of the depositions that he took on our case. He failed to inform us of our rights to a jury option. He refused to investigate that the defense and their lawyers destroyed evidence in our favor when we asked him to do so.”
2
Unprofessional Conduct
“When we complained to the Cincinnati Bar on him 2 months after firing him he tried to retaliate by sending us a addition bill for $1500 and claiming that we were 2 months past due in spite of his office aide telling us 2 months prior that we were competely paid up. He told a replacement lawyer private facts about our case without informed consent by us and put a negative spin on it to try to sabotage our finding a replacement.”

I hired this firm and let me say they are AMAZING! James Whitfield was very through he answered all my questions and made sure I knew my rights! He made family court a breeze! Even down to the front desk everyone was kind, supportive and there for me. I would 💯% recommend them and especially James! He won my case and he made sure I knew what to do in the future. It means a lot to have a lawyer who is supportive, informed and dedicated to the case . Thank you all for everything!

I have been working through some issues with my ex husband, regarding child support, parenting times and other things associated with this, and Ed Vardiman represented me through it all. Going into this process, I was unsure if I would be able to convey my message and communicate with him enough, what I was up against, as it was an extremely exhausting and stressful time. Ed consistently instilled me with just the right amount of confidence that things would work out. We have not received the magistrate's decision just yet, but that regardless of the outcome, I was thoroughly impressed with his work, and felt confident in the room having him on my side. Ed did a GREAT job, and everything he said would happen, and what to expect happened. The other attorney spoke a lot, was overly and ineffectively loud. We stated the facts and I remained somewhat calm, before I almost fell off the stand. I feel like this profession may be a thankless job at times, but I didn't want to let the opportunity pass, to let him know that his hard work was appreciated, and like I told my family and friends, he outshined the other attorney in every aspect, and I can't thank him enough for the support he provided. -Cara C.

From the very start Tonya had me in the best interest, she understood and was compassionate and professional and was always there when I had questions or concerns and kept me in the loop every step of the way. A late review but he help me win my social security disability hearing appeal back in 2021. I had the most difficult judge ever with a very low approval rate. He listens to your issues and concerns. He helped presented a good case for me during my hearing and won my case.

Daniel is a charismatic, smart, diligent, knowledgeable, and hard working attorney. When Daniel speaks, people listen; he doesn't mince words, and knows the right things to say and when to say it to win your case. Additionally, Daniel is very understanding and compassionate to what his clients are really going through, and actually listens. He is not the type of attorney that pushes you off to work with a paralegal, Daniel personally works closely one-on-one with his clients. He was able to navigate the ins and outs of my case, with my very rare and hard to understand disease, to successfully winning my case. Daniel is truly an amazing attorney, and he has all the traits, charastics, and skills you could possibly want from an attorney. Trust that you will not be disappointed if you decide to hire Daniel to represent you!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cincinnati, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
