Pros
1
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Doug is a really good guy (not something you'll often hear about an attorney). He does what he says he will. He's a clear communicator, he sets expectations clearly, then he follows up and follows through.”
2
Achieves favorable outcomes for clients
“In the end he was able to do exactly what he thought he would.”
3
Affordable and reasonable fees
“His price was fair, and his fee was fixed regardless of whether it took him one court appearance in the township Mayor's Court or if we needed to transfer (appeal) it in to the county court.”
4
Dedicated and hardworking
“This is the lawyer for you if you want someone that is going to work hard for you, and get the best possible outcome that a lawyer can.”
5
Trustworthy and honest
“His honesty is refreshing!”
Cons
1
Concerns about not fighting hard enough for client's rights
“My case felt as if he was managing me through a process created in favor of the prosecutor and judge who basically was prosecuting from the bench. I have the right to face my accuser and many times was denied this right and he didn't fight for it.”
2
Potential for excessive punishment in plea deals
“In the end, I was given excessive punishment as part of a plea deal that you wouldn't even get risking a public defender. The punishment rendered was far outside of what is prescribed by law with maximum penalties imposed.”

I live out of state and had multiple traffic related violations with a bench warrant that needed to be resolved. I was able to speak with Douglass within 2 hours of contacting his firm. He was polite, professional, and took the time to gather the details. Most importantly, he must have connections and great skill in practicing law. He not only had the bench warrant lifted, but had my case dismissed in 36 hours. A huge thank you to his entire team. Looking at other attorneys in the Franklin County area, his pricing is much lower too! I would recommend Riddell Law if you are in a bind and need a competent attorney to represent you. Well done!

I hired Mr. Riddell for an OVI ticket and might as well represented myself. My case felt as if he was managing me through a process created in favor of the prosecutor and judge who basically was prosecuting from the bench. I have the right to face my accuser and many times was denied this right and he didn't fight for it. I was repeatedly asked by him to wait in the hallway for every appearance barring the last. In the end, I was given excessive punishment as part of a plea deal that you wouldn't even get risking a public defender. The punishment rendered was far outside of what is prescribed by law with maximum penalties imposed.

Got a ticket beginning of October 80/65…Doug got it dismissed after an online class…got another ticket mid October 87/65…I thought I was screw and honestly I deserved it…Doug got that dismissed too…honestly I don’t know how he does it but I offered to add him to my last will and testament…he declined of course…wouldn’t even accept a tip…if you have a ticket call him, you won’t regret it.

This is the lawyer for you if you want someone that is going to work hard for you, and get the best possible outcome that a lawyer can. Doug Riddell is top-notch! He has been my husband's attorney on three cases (OVI, violation of a protection order, and probation violation)...My husband kept his work driving privileges the whole time of his OVI suspension, and didn't have to miss work to go to court until the final hearing. Also he kept him out of jail. The protection order case was dismissed at the first hearing. The probation violation is still pending, but he has already done more than we expected, and we have complete faith that he will come through for us yet again. I stop short of calling him a miracle worker, but I would recommend him to anyone in a bad spot. He is affordable, and he really works hard for you. His honesty is refreshing! Look no further, as a phone call to Doug Riddell will be the best decision you make.

Aaron Kenter is a professional, hard working, hard fighting, take-no-prisoners attorney that I have had the honor to represent me. I desperately needed help with my child custody case. My previous attorney screwed my case up something horrible, was weak, and not very experienced with contested custody cases, or tough opposing lawyers and magistrates. My previous attorney was a very, very nice guy..the HELL with that!!!!! I needed a lawyer who was smart, fearless, knowledgeable and experienced with the heart of a tiger shark! Aaron Kenter (and his supervisor Tony Greco) are textbook definitions of a phenomenal, dedicated attorneys who get the job done! Because of these two gentlemen... They won my case, I have my son, I have peace of mind. and they taught my ex a lesson she will never forget! If you ever need lawyers who will fight like hell on your side, make you laugh when you think there is no hope in the world of you winning, and have a long proven track record of winning tough cases... look no further then this very talented attorney! Thank you so much Aaron for all your hard work and phenomenal expertise!

Our case came at a time when we were looking for answers for the best way to handle a less than supportive environment for my daughter. This office and Aaron in particular was honest with us about our case. He supported me through a difficult time and showed me direction when I needed it. He was always available day or night to help, Aaron is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced attorney in all areas of the domestic/family law area. In a practice area that can be very emotional and antagonistic, Aaron remains calm with his effective focus on the factual and legal issues. Aaron remains very caring about his clients and is a professionally relentless advocate on their behalf. I could not have gotten through this without him and his determination.

I have had the pleasure of having Alex twice. Once for my gf for a DUI. He let us know what was going on through the whole thing. Helped get her license back ASAP. He got all other charges dismissed. Then I had to use him for my case driving under suspension. He helped me get driving priveldges then got all other charges dismissed. And only chsrged with no operator license. Very small fine. My gf and I are very pleased with him and would recommend him to everybody we know. His fees are reasonable and he will work with on them. He answers calls and texts within the hour.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Columbus, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
