In the end I couldn't have been happier with the obn outcome/ decision. Very pleased with my decision in choosing Todd to represent myself in this matter.

Todd Collis represented me as legal council when I faced disciplinary action from the Ohio Board of Nursing. He was able to skillfully develop a consent agreement that was acceptable to the BON based on extenuating circumstances. Mr. Collis was very considerate, caring and competent during this very stressful process. I highly recommend the Todd Collis and the Collis law group to any nurse facing sanctions against their nursing license from the Board of Nursing.

I am a recent graduate nurse (12/16) who is taking the next step towards becoming a licensed RN; testing for the Ohio Nursing Board exam known as NCLEX-RN. The application process requires the applicant to provide all court documents and an explanation of events surrounding any criminal background events. This was a daunting and stressful time for me. I had made a mistake earlier in my life and was charged and convicted of a misdemeanor. A friend and nursing colleague who was in a similar predicament referred me to Mr. Todd Collis. Initially, I reached out to Mr. Collis via a phone call. He was very kind and listened to my fears surrounding my case and intention to test for the state Nursing Exam. I then met with Mr. Collis personally at his office in Columbus. I want to be very clear to all who my be in a similar situation or may need professional advice from an attorney. Mr. Collis and staff made me feel most comfortable. We sat together and discussed my background in detail. He gathered all pertinent court documents, assisted me in writing a professional statement to the Ohio Board of Nursing, and aided in the submission of my application to the Board. I am so very grateful to Mr. Collis and his staff for the professional advice, courtesy, and kindness shown to me! Please understand, I am writing this because I want anyone out there who may be in a similar situation, to know that Mr. Collis can help and will help you. I spent years working diligently to graduate from nursing school and I know the effort it takes. I owed it to myself to have a professional attorney assist me through the process of becoming licensed. I am so pleased to say my application was granted by the Board and I am scheduled to take the NCLEX exam in two weeks. Thank you so very much Mr. Collis!

Last year in 2016 I hired Todd Collis to represent me with a matter involving the Ohio Board of Nursing. This was a difficult time for me and my family and Todd was very warm and supportive, which was very refreshing. He is professional and very well experienced with these matters. I appreciated his promptness in returning calls and emails, he was and is very accessible to answer all questions. Most nurses that find themselves in circumstances involving the Ohio Board of Nursing are going through a very difficult time and feel very lost, Todd was sympathetic and understanding. I honestly felt he wanted the best for me and my family and to see us through to the best possible outcome, which is what we got !! I never felt rushed, he carefully walked me through stages of the process and what I could expect. I can only hope that other nurses will find Todd and reach out to his office for assistance. He has the experience, knowledge and understanding.

Aaron Kenter is a professional, hard working, hard fighting, take-no-prisoners attorney that I have had the honor to represent me. I desperately needed help with my child custody case. My previous attorney screwed my case up something horrible, was weak, and not very experienced with contested custody cases, or tough opposing lawyers and magistrates. My previous attorney was a very, very nice guy..the HELL with that!!!!! I needed a lawyer who was smart, fearless, knowledgeable and experienced with the heart of a tiger shark! Aaron Kenter (and his supervisor Tony Greco) are textbook definitions of a phenomenal, dedicated attorneys who get the job done! Because of these two gentlemen... They won my case, I have my son, I have peace of mind. and they taught my ex a lesson she will never forget! If you ever need lawyers who will fight like hell on your side, make you laugh when you think there is no hope in the world of you winning, and have a long proven track record of winning tough cases... look no further then this very talented attorney! Thank you so much Aaron for all your hard work and phenomenal expertise!

Our case came at a time when we were looking for answers for the best way to handle a less than supportive environment for my daughter. This office and Aaron in particular was honest with us about our case. He supported me through a difficult time and showed me direction when I needed it. He was always available day or night to help, Aaron is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced attorney in all areas of the domestic/family law area. In a practice area that can be very emotional and antagonistic, Aaron remains calm with his effective focus on the factual and legal issues. Aaron remains very caring about his clients and is a professionally relentless advocate on their behalf. I could not have gotten through this without him and his determination.

I have had the pleasure of having Alex twice. Once for my gf for a DUI. He let us know what was going on through the whole thing. Helped get her license back ASAP. He got all other charges dismissed. Then I had to use him for my case driving under suspension. He helped me get driving priveldges then got all other charges dismissed. And only chsrged with no operator license. Very small fine. My gf and I are very pleased with him and would recommend him to everybody we know. His fees are reasonable and he will work with on them. He answers calls and texts within the hour.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Columbus, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
