I had two separate cases with her at one time. The outcome for one was BS. The other case she did very little and she used the money for the other case. She failed to keep me updated on the time and money spent. I finally receive it after requesting it many times. Now I owe more?! She is a joke of an atty and don't know how she is still one. She's rude, she does not return calls, you can't get ahold of her, she's worthless! I will NEVER refer her to anyone. I didn't even want to give her a star.

I went through heather for my divorce . And honestly I didn’t really need a lawyer just guidance on filing out the paperwork . I knew my ex wasn’t going to appear so there wasn’t going to be a fight . I paid heather in full up front . After 8 months I finally got a court date . Due to covid I understood that . My divorce has been final since October and I am now getting notices from the court that my filing fees haven’t been paid . I contacted another party from her office who adviced me it would be taken care of immediately, however obviously it wasn’t because I have now received another notice and just contacted the courts to learn it still haven’t been taken care of . I don’t even care that she didn’t appear at court and sent another lawyer in her place . Like I said there was no real need for a lawyer in my case . But atleast make sure my filing fees that I have already paid are taken care of . I have messaged many times in regards to this matter and have received no response .

Heather is BY FAR the most honest Lawyer! She doesn’t play around & gets the job done. Went out of her way to make sure I felt comfortable with certain things and made sure everything was pin-pointed in every angle. Wouldn’t of wanted any other person to represent me with my kiddos. Totally recommend

I recommend Heather as your next attorney because....I hired Heather about 4yrs ago and have used her for every year since then. I actually have a current case with her. She is very knowledgeable and has always been upfront on everything even if I didn't want to hear it. She doesn't sugar coat anything which is what I love about her. She has not overly charged me like past attorneys I have had. She answers phone calls, texts, and emails in a timely manner always. I have had her for every contempt that my child's father has been in for the past 4yrs.

My family and I had used Heather for several occasions. First starting with my husband, who wasn’t my husband when he hired her for his custody case. He was able to achieve all he aimed and filed for in court, plus some. Then I had to hire her for my custody case down the road & their were many factors involved in this one, it wasn’t easy. She came to court and served us well. Iv had to reach out to her many many times for advice, or how to handle this or that along the way. Even personal advice too, although it wasn't her job to return those favors or her responsibilities she would take the time to help us in any way she could. I do truly recommend Heather as an attorney, even though their were times I may not of agreed at the very moment, in my head I seen other solutions, she knew right away what to do and had my children and families best interest at all times being her priority. I was being stubborn and one track minded and she’s been and advocate for what we needed her for first, and a shark for us in the end. She brought on all we needed plus some. I’d have to say she handled herself well through all of our journies, represented us in the manner we needed exceptionally and we gave her some pretty messy, complicated situations to handle. Again, We highly recommend her and will always.

Absolutely a fantastic attorney. She is handling my case right now and I have been OVERLY pleased with her responsiveness. There have been a few times she did not get back to me quickly (less than 24 hours); however, those were due to family emergencies...which I think is totally acceptable.

Tom is an exceptional attorney. I never ever thought I would have to file bankruptcy, and I was devastated, however, Tom made the entire process smooth and he answered every question we had. He is extremely compassionate about his firm and his customers. He did not treat us like we were nobodies, instead he understood how difficult a decision this was for us and guided us every step of the way. I cannot say enough good things about him. I would highly recommend him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Dayton, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
