Highly professional and responsive attorney
“Ian was very professional and straight to the point. He answered all of our questions. Anytime I tried to get in touch with him about our on-going case he was very prompt with a response and even called on a Saturday!”
2
Achieves desired outcomes for clients
“He is honest and dependable. If it wasn't for Ian I don't know what would have happened with our cases. He is also very affordable and very nice.”
3
Excellent client communication and support
“He always told us what to expect and what would be our possibilities. Me and my husband can't thank him enough for what he already has done for our family and what he is currently in the process of doing.”
Cons
1
Potential for incompetence and mistakes
“Stay away!!! He is nice, personal but not competent. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and think 'everyone makes mistakes', but he has caused irreparable damage for our family that can't be undone that we are still paying the price for.”
2
Lack of organization and responsiveness
“This attorney has zero organization and he drug his feet on getting us a hearing for a year after we paid him. That means the longer that he drug his feet on a hearing, the longer we had to wait to start rebuilding financially.”

We have worked with Ian now for over 3 years. In MULTIPLE cases of different subjects. He has handled a child custody case, another case regarding a CPO order unrelated to child custody , and we currently hired him again for my opened case regarding custody hearing into trial. I will update my review on Google and AVVO after trial is done, but this far Ian has been supportive, given us the answers we needed, and been responsive when we question how the courts work etc! Very happy to have him as our attorney, and looking forward to see how he maneuvers us and preps us for trial and does during trial! Will update soon!’

Got myself Into a Horrible Situation And Was Looking at A long Time In Prison for the mistakes I made at the time. I Did Not See No Light at the end of the tunnel, and then i hired Ian. Not Only Was He NOT Judgmental To The Situation he was SUPER Re-Assuring and Confident with my Case. He Drove To the Jail I was being held at Countless Times and Kept In Constant Contact With Me And My Family Updating ME Every Step Of The Way. He Was Able to get me help for my bad drug usage at the time and was able to bring light and a second chance to my life, and that is Something i am very grateful for.

Stay away!!! He is nice, personal but not competent. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and think "everyone makes mistakes", but he has caused irreparable damage for our family that can't be undone that we are still paying the price for. So all I can do at this point is warn the public so they wont fall prey to incompetency when they are vulnerable like we were. This is personal to tell, but if it will help someone else avoid the trouble we had I will gladly share what happened. We had to do a bankruptcy due to medical bills. My child was sick and had to go to Mayo Clinic repeatedly. We tried everything to avoid bankruptcy, but we couldn't avoid it. We hired this attorney in good faith that we could just get this over with and put this behind us. Nope we are still paying the price for his incompetency. We asked him to reaffirm our vehicles and our house and what did he do??? HE GOT THEM DISCHARGED in the bankruptcy when they were supposed to be reaffirmed.. That was a permanent mistake that cannot be easily undone with out further hardship. I honestly tried to let that go and just call it "rotten luck", but that decision is still causing new problems for us that will not get better for 2 years! Luckily I believe in a God that is bigger and can handle this. Thankfully we can still live in the house as long as we make payments, so we are not homeless. As far as the vehicles go, because my husband's income is high, we did get financed for 2 new vehicles at payments that wont fully break us, but I think if we had a lower income we wouldn't have been so fortunate... Next... This attorney has zero organization and he drug his feet on getting us a hearing for a year after we paid him. That means the longer that he drug his feet on a hearing, the longer we had to wait to start rebuilding financially.. We tried to be patient, but eventually that got old. He wouldn't return our calls intended to inquire about the status of when our court hearing would be. FYI we were afraid of making him mad at us so we wouldn't call repeatedly, but after months would pass, we would call for an update with no call back for weeks. When he would finally follow up and call us back he would make up excuses and say that it's taking a long time to get hearings in Toledo, which was not true. My friend went through another attorney in the area for the same thing and got right in for a hearing. The difference was the attorney. He would say "I'll send you an email or a link to this fill this out and we can get you your hearing.." and weeks would go by no email. Call the office again. NO call back of course. There are so many other issues that came up that I do not have the time to go into, but please believe every bad review left on this, it's exactly what happened to us. I have no idea how he is getting any positive reviews. I am guessing they are his friends reviewing him. That's only thing I can guess. Or that's he's been educated in law and has been able to avoid the consequences that he deserves. I do believe that it will catch up to him eventually, but for now be warned. He hurts peoples lives and does not advocate for his clients.

I found Steve during a very dark spot in my life. My spouse was unfaithful, and I was lost. I talked with Steve over the phone the day after I found out. Through my pain, anguish, and confusion. Steve not only listened-but talked to me like a friend. He was my first "legal" phone call, and I didn't, make another one. Over the next several months Steve was more than capable of helping me navigate the unknown dark waters that I had found myself immersed in. I'm happy to say that after 11 months. With Steve's guidance and knowledge of the laws. That my divorce is final, and I am in a great spot in life. Steve took care of everything, all the details both big and small. Without his help, I have no idea where I would be now. Thanks Steve.

Steve helped with a divorce case and was extremely helpful in all aspects, including consultation, court proceedings, mediation appointments, friendly advice and remaining firm on the desired outcome. The divorce was not desired and Steve helped to lengthen the process so that all avenues were explored to keep the divorce from taking place. Steve was mindful of our two children that were involved and what would be best for them long-term. Steve was a great help and I wouldn't hesitate to use his services or refer him to others. Thanks Steve!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Defiance, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
