Pros
1
Knowledgeable and reassuring legal representation
“Linda was great to work with - very attentive, knowledgeable and reassuring. Would recommend her and Lawrence Law Office to anyone without hesitation.”
2
Successful in handling complex legal matters
“They were successful in fighting to get it for me and win the appeal. They work hard and the fees were reasonable. Top law firm.”
3

“Laura was very thorough with me and provided new perspective in our initial meeting. No complaints!”
Cons
1
Poor communication and lack of responsiveness
“I'd give zero stars but you have to give one to leave a review. Never once in the 7 months that I had a case with them did I EVER get a returned phone call. Emails? Sometimes but NEVER a returned call.”
2
Overpricing and questionable billing practices
“They kept charging me for things that I seen no results. Her office set up and appointment with my mother and husband. They called my mother and rescheduled the phone interview for later in the day and failed to call her so she called and spoke with her. Then they never called my husband and I had to call in and figure out why and the secretary told me she had the wrong number when they are the one who called him and scheduled the interview.”
3
Lack of professionalism and client service
“The lack of professionalism is truly astounding. If you expect to have a call returned, don't try this firm. If you expect communication, don't waste your time or money here.”
4
Failure to follow through on commitments
“I was told in the beginning I could do a payment plan but no one every got back to me on how much just that the invoice needed to be paid.”
5
Questionable legal advice and representation
“Hired Rod for an emergency custody case and turned into a complete disaster. Started off with already having a case at there office and another case arose from the first case. We'll to start it off Rod said there was no charge for the "consultation" so we went to court and he had Tami with him from his office and they were absolutely ridiculous. The judge knew the defendant was lying but Rod and Tami had all the evidence and not one time showed anything.”

I cannot recommend their services. The work was good but their billing follow up is atrocious. They forgot to apply a payment of slightly over $1600 to my retainer that I had to catch and tell them they charged me for. My case was then finalized in the first week of October and I had to contact them twice, once the week of thanksgiving and once more this week, to get my retainer refunded. I would avoid and seek services elsewhere.

Hired Rod for an emergency custody case and turned into a complete disaster. Started off with already having a case at there office and another case arose from the first case. We’ll to start it off Rod said there was no charge for the “consultation” so we went to court and he had Tami with him from his office and they were absolutely ridiculous. The judge knew the defendant was lying but Rod and Tami had all the evidence and not one time showed anything. After we left court we decided to terminate with them because they were such a joke. So long story short that “free consultation” turned into almost 900$ just for that, then show up to court and Tami who was “representing “ us with Rod did nothing in court. All this lawyer firm is overpriced paper pushers. Don’t call them save your money and fight for yourself by yourself before you call these people!!!

I have hired Eric for a variety of property dealings. Eric is a very valuable attorney for both complex and simple legal assistance. In my situation he got to know my immediate needs, long term objective, and even my family before determining the correct solution and taking action. He possesses the right balance of general legal expertise and local area knowledge to get things done quickly and efficiently. He takes the time to thoroughly understand your request and circumstances before delivering a solution. Also, his willingness to offer evening office hours is extremely convenient for people like me that find it difficult to meet during the day.

Eric Coss, Esq., did an EXCELLENT job representing our interest in a deed restriction dispute that occurred within a small neighborhood. Eric's wisdom from the onset provided a calming voice of reason. He relentlessly worked to find documentation that supported all involved. Because of his good relationships and professionalism, he was able to effectively worked with our county clerk. We are very grateful for Eric's involvement and the positive outcome in our dispute.

We hired Eric Coss as an attorney for two projects, and he was wonderful to work with on both. The first project was a real estate deal. We needed to enter into contract with a purchaser for a condo that we had already found. He was able to provide all of the documents necessary as well as any back end real estate work in a very fast amount of time. On top of that, he saved us quite a bit of money vs. the typical method of selling a home. It was a seamless process, he made any adjustments & amendments to documents quickly, and we were able to enter into a real estate contract & close within about a month and a half. The second project we hired him for was our personal estate planning. We needed wills, power of attorney, and living wills. It took two meetings to get this accomplished, but it was honestly minimal effort on our part. He met with us the first time to understand our wishes for all parts of the documents that we wanted, including a trust & guardianship for our child. When he got everything written up, we reviewed it all in detail & signed everything in his office. Eric was great to work with, reasonably priced, and delivered exactly what we asked for every time. I would highly recommend using him, and we will certainly be using him for any other legal needs in the future.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Delaware, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
