I recently worked with Eric as my representation in a case and was very pleased with the hard work he provided for my case. He genuinely listened to and understood my concerns throughout the entire court process. I highly recommend Eric!

We had a laughably bad experience with this firm. I would give them a 0 if that was possible. My wife and I had a consultation with attorney Eric Ricker in their Delaware office and it was weirdly tense and confrontational from the start. The 30 minute consultation cost $100 and we outlined our case (seeking guardianship of a minor relative) in excruciating detail, and all he could do was sip water, dramatically run his fingers through his hair, and talk about how strange of a case it is. It's a bit unique, but not on that level. He had never heard of grandparent power of attorney, but I've come to find out it's a common thing. There are forms posted on many court web sites, including the court we're targeting. He said he would do some research and call us back, but it's been several weeks and we haven't heard back after calling and emailing multiple times. Probably a blessing at this point. UPDATE: I didn't think the experience with them could get worse but it somehow did. Eric eventually called back, left a voicemail referencing this review, called me by the wrong name, and said he didn't call back sooner because he wrote down the wrong phone number.

Lauren is an absolute blessing! Couldn't ask for better representation in my custody case. She's on top of everything and communicates every step of the process clearly and honestly. So thankful for her!

My father passed away and it was a very trying time for me. I needed probate assistance and legal advice. Through an odd set of circumstances I ended up contacting Manos, Martin & Pergram and spoke to Kathleen Johnson. She provided me with valuable help and insight, even before we met in person. The firm was further away from me than other law offices, but after meeting and working Kathleen, I knew I made the right decision. If I need legal assistance in the future, Kathleen will be my first contact.

Kathleen Johnson recently assisted us in both the sale of one home and the purchase of another. We were very impressed by her responsiveness and professionalism. She provided excellent service and expertise and we would highly recommend.

I have hired Eric for a variety of property dealings. Eric is a very valuable attorney for both complex and simple legal assistance. In my situation he got to know my immediate needs, long term objective, and even my family before determining the correct solution and taking action. He possesses the right balance of general legal expertise and local area knowledge to get things done quickly and efficiently. He takes the time to thoroughly understand your request and circumstances before delivering a solution. Also, his willingness to offer evening office hours is extremely convenient for people like me that find it difficult to meet during the day.

Eric Coss, Esq., did an EXCELLENT job representing our interest in a deed restriction dispute that occurred within a small neighborhood. Eric's wisdom from the onset provided a calming voice of reason. He relentlessly worked to find documentation that supported all involved. Because of his good relationships and professionalism, he was able to effectively worked with our county clerk. We are very grateful for Eric's involvement and the positive outcome in our dispute.

We hired Eric Coss as an attorney for two projects, and he was wonderful to work with on both. The first project was a real estate deal. We needed to enter into contract with a purchaser for a condo that we had already found. He was able to provide all of the documents necessary as well as any back end real estate work in a very fast amount of time. On top of that, he saved us quite a bit of money vs. the typical method of selling a home. It was a seamless process, he made any adjustments & amendments to documents quickly, and we were able to enter into a real estate contract & close within about a month and a half. The second project we hired him for was our personal estate planning. We needed wills, power of attorney, and living wills. It took two meetings to get this accomplished, but it was honestly minimal effort on our part. He met with us the first time to understand our wishes for all parts of the documents that we wanted, including a trust & guardianship for our child. When he got everything written up, we reviewed it all in detail & signed everything in his office. Eric was great to work with, reasonably priced, and delivered exactly what we asked for every time. I would highly recommend using him, and we will certainly be using him for any other legal needs in the future.

I was recommended to Michael through a friend of mine who knew him personally, and I have nothing but good things to say. He took over my case, and within a week had a structured game plan for me and handled any and all communication between myself and the other party and their insurance. He provided me updates almost daily via phone call and text message and drove over 2 hours weekly to meet me in person, since I was still recovering from the accident. The entire process took no longer than a few months, and Michael ensured I was more than fairly compensated. He is the definition of under-promising and over-delivering.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Delaware, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
