Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable, professional, and dedicated attorneys
“Objectives Driven, Straight forward, Professional and very knowledgeable attorneys. Troy and John are extremely honest and dedicated to work with.”
2
Excellent customer service and communication
“Great customer service. Timely responses. Sound advice.”
3
Successful case outcomes and strong advocacy for clients
“They were amazing. I spoke to my lawyer every week and he really fought for me. I would highly recommend them.”
4
Affordable and flexible payment options
“I was referred to Troy Doucet by my daughter who attended classes with him at Capital University. Whether it was Doucet & Associates or Doucet Gerling, it was the only law office that would handle my case and do so successfully without a high price tag. Their payment arrangements made me able to defend my position and save my house from foreclosure.”
5
Responsive and helpful even for non-clients
“Troy Doucet gave me great advice with a phone call. Although I was not even client, he responded very quickly to me. I would definitely hire him to help me in the future.”
Cons
1
High legal fees and potential for costs to exceed expected outcomes
“Alternatively, if the class action suit was not desired, his retainer fee per his contract, stipulating $1000/month to him regardless of any activity on the case, plus a lump sum in advance of $6000 if case goes to trial, could therefore cost the Defendant $”
2
Concerns about the firm's internal management and turnover
“Lots of questionable, faceless (possibly fake?) 5-star client reviews out there, and the former employee reviews on a well-known website indicate unusual turnover and management issues within the firm.”

Doucet Law was professional and courteous when it came handling our affairs. The entire staff was always welcoming and friendly. Eric Halloway listened to us dilligently and took matters into his own hands after we had several discussions. We definitely felt at peace knowing Doucet Law had our backs. If we run into any issues in the future, we'll be back.

Troy won my mother's case against the monster Chase Bank multiple times, and thanks to their fight other people have benefited and seen justice. I would recommend Troy and his team to anyone!

Overall I feel I picked the wrong lawfirm for my case. Had my case been something other than a civil suit between two individuals Doucet might have been the right choice for me. I feel that my case wasn't taken seriously and that the communication was lacking. I whole heartedly believe I could have saved myself $20k and 6 months of sleep impairing stress had I worked with another firm.

I own a local insurance agency in the Columbus area and recommend Erik to my clients often, and use him myself. He takes the time to understand each client's needs. Everyone needs to make sure they have a plan and Erik is the best at tailoring that to each individual.

Mr. Holloway represented me in a case against my previous employer. He was very thorough, punctual, and on top of my case the the entire time. He has a lot of knowledge regarding my employment case, and when in doubt, he found the answers and talked to other colleagues to make sure we had the best outcome. But, what I believe is his best qualities of his practice is, is he is family oriented and truly wants what the best and what is fair. Thank you! I would highly recommend his practice.

Atty Holloway was very pleasant to work with. He exceeded my expectations with his knowledge, expertise, and positive attitude. Never once did I ever have to wonder or question anything. I needed Eric's services to review a Separation Agreement that included a severance package. We also reviewed negotiating a longer term severance period. Eric was very concerned that I understood all my options and provided more than expected information throughout the negotiation. I am a non-practicing attorney and have worked in HR and with contracts. Although I am familiar with the area of employment law, Eric had much to teach me. Due to his experience and research, I was able to get the most satisfactory severance deal with my former employer.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Dublin, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
