In the summer of 2022, I was riding my bicycle and almost went into a dangerous sewer grate along Linden Road in Rocky River. The grate had slots parallel with the road, which could easily swallow a whole bicycle wheel, causing serious injuries to an unsuspecting cyclist. Linden Road had twenty such drainage grates along its ¾ mile length and was near a school. I contacted cycling advocate attorney Kenneth Knabe and sent him photos of these dangerous grates. Mr. Knabe in turn alerted the city officials to these hazards and in early 2023, they installed bicycle-friendly grates into the roadway.

Happily cycling for over 30 years, I never thought I would get hit by a car, but it happened. After the hospital stay and recovering slowly at home, I just didn’t want to deal with starting any legal aspect of the situation. However, the Knabe Law Firm was highly recommended by a trusted fellow cyclist, so I called Ken - I’m so glad I did. Ken Knabe is very smart, thorough, and tenacious in pursuing a fair and just result. His extensive experience and knowledge of the law – particularly in regards to cyclists’ rights and driving laws, means that he knows exactly what to investigate and what information to gather. His case document preparation is exceptional. My case was hard, but in all of our conversations and meetings, I always left feeling that he was on top of everything, and this was always validated. The Knabe Law Firm is second to none in representing cyclists in bike/car accidents. I give Ken Knabe and his team the highest recommendation. If you’re a cyclist involved in a bike/car accident, don’t wait – call Ken Knabe.

I was seriously injured while on my bike by an inattentive driver. I call the Knabe Law Firm due to the work Ken does with local advocacy groups and his involvement in the cycling community. Ken and his staff worked diligently on my case. They handled everything with a difficult insurance company and hospital system. I would highly recommend their services.

Mr. Gerard D'Souza is extremely helpful, professional and always approachable on many aspects of the US immigration process. He is always on top of things despite the ever-changing political environment and regulations. As a medical professional, I admit that I have little knowledge of the immigration laws and pitfalls that I might encounter but he always explains everything to me patiently. I highly recommend him for any of your immigration concerns/help. Only the best!

Mr. Jacobs is the best lawyer I have ever had . He is very fair priced, and is willing to work with you on payments. He is very honest with you on every aspect of your case. He is always on time to court. And he is very ,very good with communication through calls and text. He is by far the best attorney I have ever had and unfortunately I have had several. He is a great family man who loves his wife and kids and you can see that by the way he treats all the people he comes in contact with. Over all if you choose Joe you are making a great Choice.

Mr. Jacobs has served as lead legal counsel for Positive Results since 1998. He has been an integral part of all aspects of our business. He created our Master Services agreement, Statements of Work (SOW) templates, created and continuously updates our employment and independent contractor agreements, and provides solid legal advice on all of our 3rd party reseller agreements. His attention to detail in all aspects of his work has been noticeable throughout our ongoing relationship. In fact, Mr. Jacobs recently saved us what could have been thousands of dollars in lost revenue by pointing out a specific clause in a partnership agreement where the 3rd party company held rights to sever the relationship without cause. In our industry, that can be a huge disaster. I would recommend Joseph Jacobs to anyone seeking solid corporate legal advice at reasonable rates. Mr. Jacobs has always demonstrated the highest regard for integrity and character. He represents us, but is always mindful to be fair to all parties involved.

I hired Mr. Butler to help with a matter involving municipal law and specifically a hearing in front of the Board of Elections. His research and brief on the issues presented were thorough and well written. His argument against a vociferous opponent were strong and persuasive. His wise counsel was just what our committee needed.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lakewood, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
