I have been a client of David McArtor and office for 3 years for custody matters. I can not say enough about him and his office staff, especially Jess. She was always bright, understanding, easy to talk to! David ALWAYS made me feel comfortable and confident in the decisions I was making from the initial consultation to the final resolution. He is excellent with communicating, being transparent, and ALWAYS ensuring that my rights as a parent were protected and that the best interests of my children were always prioritized. He truly took my case to heart. David and his staff treated me fairly and made sure that I understood everything that was happening in my case. He and the whole team were very knowledgeable, supportive, responsive, proactive, patient, hardworking, courteous, organized, demonstrated exceptional professionalism, expertise, and dedication.Their thorough understanding of family law and attention to detail were evident throughout the process. They kept me informed every step of the way, promptly, addressed any concerns I had, and consistently advocated on my behalf. David always made me feel HEARD, as so many attorneys out there are only concerned about money! David is definitely NOT one of them! Walking into the office as a scared single mother of 4 children, David and his staff were very welcoming and now have become part of my family! I would not have trusted anyone else with my case! 1000% highly recommend David and his whole team to anyone in need of legal representation for custody and child support matters. Their expertise and professionalism truly made a difference in my case, and I am grateful for their outstanding service

I retained David Mcartor on a civil matter against my ex husband in November 2023. HORRIBLE attorney. Do not use if you’re a woman. Takes the man’s side. For the preliminary meeting he sent an assistant that wasn’t prepared. Embarrassed me and himself in his inability to answer the Magistrates questions. David would never return my phone calls or answer my emails. In addition any meetings with him he would degrade me. He asked if I needed a tissue when I entered the room . I asked him why would I need a tissue. He proceeded to say I was stupid.I feel he didn’t know how to proceed with my case. He discharged himself prior to the court date.

Remember. Not many people submit positive reviews. They only do it when they are not satisfied. So over the decades. 3 negatives is an A+

Complete waste of my time an money !! Going through a vicious painful custody battle and in the short time I’ve retained him Acted completely put out that I requested their assistance in finding a different visitation center Also my visits with my child have been suspended for the last five weeks Which has been completly devastating for me !! Let alone the stress an confusion my child must feel !!When I called this Monday to speak with his paralegal and ask what’s the hold up what visitation centers do I need to contact? Why does no one have a sense of urgency beings I’ve not seen my baby in five weeks ! Have we received anything from opposing counsel yet ? Mr. McArtors paralegal became extremely defensive would not let me get in one word ! So the next day I recieved an email from David threatening to withdraw his legal counsel Because he wouldn’t stand for me Critizing his team !!! I immediately sent a reply stating my explanation listing the questions I asked and described the defensive condescending way his paralegal spoke to me I also stated my confusion as to why my questions were perceived to be critical ? To add insult to injury I recieved another email from David McArtor today stating he would be withdrawing as my counsel and he wishes me the best !!!! I’m completly in shock an awe of this actually happening today an with my court date right around the corner ! So he’s used more then half of my $4000 retainer billing me for I have no flipping idea ? To say I feel completely helpless an trying to shake that awful feeling of being kicked when your alredy so very down Is a Understatement!!! So not only do I feel taken advantage of financially but in shock an disbelief that I went to this man for help at the lowest point of my life completely trusting him Only to end up in this very bleak place so close to the hearing date. !!! Please beware of this wolf in sheeps clothing !! You may think your getting a great attorney with awesome credentials Please use caution because I found out that persona is a fasad!! I know that god is carrying me through horrible nightmare and the reason I’m not broken from this God bless

I used this lawyer 12 years ago with my husband at the time (he's since passed away) and he was wonderful! I don't know what happened between then and now, but I referred my fiance... he overcharged (and changed his charges from he originally told us), did not communicate with us, chewed out my fiance for not contacting him (when he had called and spoke with the secretary/receptionist several times, including the day before court), and now withdrew from the case right before it's closing even though we paid him $2500. Spoke to us like we were nothing... I can't stand that! I think $2500 was way over priced for filing one form and showing up in court once for 10 minutes.

Had a 15-minute call with him regarding guardianship of a sick parent. He was sympathetic to the situation I am dealing with and offered me some additional advice on how to save on court fees. Best $40 I ever spent.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Medina, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
