I am eternally grateful for Jeremy helping me get my daughter out of a horrible situation with her mother where she was mentally and physically abused. Jeremy could see through all of their lies and deceit, especially from the mother and the grandmother. My daughter is now much happier and excelling in school and has numerous activities she chooses to participate in. She now has the opportunity to succeed in life! I will definitely call on Jeremy for any future needs regarding this case or any others. He kept us informed and updated on what was happening throughout the case and helped calm my nerves when things got rough and I had to face the unnecessary brutality of these vindictive, hateful people with their lies and attempts to manipulate the system. Thank you Jeremy for all of your help and guidance through this horrible ordeal that we have had to go through! I would recommend him to anyone that wants a straightforward, realistic lawyer.

So I will make a decade of law simplified in a few words both civil experience with Jeremy Tomb AND criminal defense: Jeremy defended me in a divorce proceeding with 1 minor child. He was able to keep me as a coparent amidst wild accusations. Jeremy defended me on a Jury Trial from the same when I was accused of telecom harassment charges for trying to just be a dad and call my child. Opposition was mad that dad called his kid to check in. Jeremy Defended me in this. Case dismissed as soon as Jeremy started Cross. Mr Tomb was smart and remembered a lie that he didn’t even note in his writings. His acumen for recalling the subtle is one ally you cannot price. He remembers things in my case I almost forgot. Jeremy Tomb will wake up, live and breathe your case. I Can’t make this up. Jeremy can find their lie QUICK and he did. Jury trial was over in minutes after the formalities. Custody or Criminal I recommend Waite Tomb and Eberly.

Jeremy Tomb is a skilled attorney in many areas of the law. I personally hired him for child custody. He is compassionate, tough, approachable and most importantly, he’s an incredibly effective advocate. He fights hard AND smart. Staff always provided exceptional and prompt service. He was always willing to listen and patiently answer my questions and concerns, lending me empathy when I needed it as well as a push when I needed it, but always making me feel heard. During trial he always on top of his game. His mind is that of a steel trap; he is highly organized, prepared and remembers everything! Jeremy is a particularly skilled trial attorney, always maintains the perfect amount of composure and assertiveness in a court room. This law firm is honest and reliable, a rare find.

I was referred to Jeremy Tomb by another attorney in May of 2015 for a very difficult custody case. My son was 14 and and had lived with his mother for 12 years. My son expressed a desire to live with me for 2+ years but his mother would not hear of it. After much deliberation I decide to hire an attorney. Obviously there was a great deal at stake and did not relish the thought of putting my son through the court process and upheaval that can accompany this process. When I first met with Jeremy and explained the last 12 years leading up to this point and reviewing my documentation, I was relieved that Jeremy had a clear & concise plan and he executed the plan with extreme prejudice. Based on my experience with Jeremy I believe he is a very competent attorney that truly cared about the outcome and had my son's best interest at heart. I've had experiences with other attorney's in the past and frankly they cannot hold a candle to Mr. Tomb's level of workmanship & expertise. I was awarded custody of my son, this was a huge answer to prayer!

Since 2009, Mr. Tomb has provided me with excellent legal counsel on a broad spectrum including domestic relations and business law. In particular, his services and advice during a rather traumatic post-decree custody filing was absolutely indispensable. As a father who is the sole guardian and legal custodian of my two children, I believe that it is a great deal due to Mr. Tomb's efforts that my children are now safer, healthier and better adjusted given the judgement that was handed down by the court. I have and will continue to pass along his contact information to friends and family that are in need of superior legal representation.

I contacted Mr. Utrecht to review a job offer and what I thought was a "Non-Compete" agreement before signing on with a new employer. As a new college graduate, I was a little concerned that I might be signing something that I did not fully understand. Mr. Utrecht was very helpful in explaining the legalities of my contract, and helped me make a good decision about my employment prospects.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Troy, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
