Betty was absolutely wonderful. I need to say her daughter, the first person I spoke with at her office was so understanding, very warm and a great pleasure to speak with. Betty , was able to answer all my questions in that 30 minute consultation. Betty was able to get me thru a very difficult time in my life. I consider her a friend for life

I do not often take time to review a business, I did wait and think about whether reviewing this business was necessary. If I save one person from wasting time it is worth it. Getting an appointment with Ms. Burley was not the problem, you can set that up online. She did have to reschedule and emailed me right away with other options, not a big deal I am flexible. Her office is a small room in connection with an optometry clinic (I think she owns), again no big deal. I do not judge people on where they work or what it looks like, only the job they do and the type a person they turn out to be. I add this in because she is not a huge company just a small business. The consultation was good and she did not charge me. She was a bit unorganized(again to each their own if you do the job), she was knowledgeable and seemed optimistic and honest. I left her office with items I needed to get back to her, she too, was going to get me the information to pay her in the next day or so. I sent her the requested information, a few questions (total of like 3), moved around some funds so I could pay her that night. I needed the questions answered so I could start to orchestrate my situation with other people, and I wanted to make sure she was paid. I did not receive a reply, after a week and a half I called just to see if she had received my emails. Her receptionist answered said she was really busy that week give her time and that she would shoot over the information for payment. After three weeks and few calls I still had not heard anything from Ms. Burley. No answer on my emails, no explanation, still no information for how to pay. I was not rude ever, not to her, or to her assistant. The last phone call her assistant did seem a little short with me. This time the assistant put me on hold, when the she came back she told me that “Ms. Burley could not see me and that due to my time constraints I should take my business elsewhere.” I waited three weeks to get that reply via her assistant. I was crushed, now I must go through this all over again. I only needed guidance on a few items, also I wanted her to be paid. Honestly the questions I needed answered and the website to pay her would have taken 30 minutes’ tops, I did not have an expectation of her drawing up the paperwork or any extensive digging of information at that time. So, if you are expecting communication or commitment I would find another lawyer because she has neither characteristic.

On just reviewing our basic case she was very rude and unhelpful to my disable husband. As if we don't have enough to deal with we surely did not need her to put us down more. Would not recommend this horrid person!

It has been my experience Betty has provided the best possible legal advice for my divorce and bankruptcy. She has allowed me to make my own decisions based on that advice and then fought for me all the way.

When it became apparent that I would have to embark on a legal dispute involving the septic system at my residence I found myself rather lost on where to turn. I had never been involved in having to sue anybody in my life and this was completely uncharted territory for me. Mark was referred to me with high regards and after he took the time to listen to my projected case it became obvious that his counsel would be my best option. His explanations on matters at hand were very sharp, highly knowledgeable, and easy for me to understand. His process was direct, appropriate, and without any sense of ego. Every step was highly well-prepared and comforting. I felt like he had a plan A, B, C, etc. when it came to attacking problems along the way. If I would ever need his counsel again I would not hesitate to contact him and would recommend him to anybody.

Matthew was very honest with me and cared about my situation. Matthew went up against Children Services and did an amazing job! Matthew returned my phone calls within 24 hours and was always very kind and straight forward with me! When I tell you that he puts up a fight, I mean he really PUTS UP A FIGHT!!! He literally made the prosecutor in my juvenile case put her head down and ran out of tricks to manipulate me in front of our magistrate. HIRE ATTORNEY MATTHEW CRAIG.

Mr. Craig has been helpful to me on multiple occasions/cases, juvenile custody, criminal, as well as divorce. I have had him as an attorney since 2014. When I say he puts up a fight and defends his client no matter what, it's an understatement. He is so good in fact, I would be his unofficial unpaid spokesman lol. All jokes aside, he has been an honor to know as more than an attorney, but an advocate when things have truly looked horrible. I'm beyond grateful to have had the pleasure to have been a client both past and present of Attorney Matt Craig.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Vermilion, Ohio?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
