I called Mr. Wallpe to start a bankruptcy filing, and he listened to my specifics thoroughly. He took the time to explain the debts to me and what my creditors could and couldn't do and what actually could be included in my filing. After his patient explanations it was determined not to file at this time and that I would contact him if there changes. I had called other attorney's who barely listened and just wanted to charge an exhorbitant fee! Thank you John!

I originally was just looking for the least expensive bankruptcy attorney, and after calling around, I found John. There is no real legal aid in this county, and Mr. Wallpe seems to be filling the void. Ironically, filing bankruptcy can be pretty expensive, but Mr. W seems to understand that if I had thousands of dollars to spend, I would not be filing bankruptcy! I ended up getting much better representation than I ever expected from Mr. Wallpe (and his partner who advised me on real estate issues). He helped me through the process without judging me, or looking down at me. He was clear and informative, took my calls, answered whatever questions I had, and always kept in close contact with me. I couldn't be happier with Mr. Wallpe.

I've never met an attorney that actually convinced me NOT to give him money. He spent well over an hour with me discussing my specific situation and led me toward a path that ultimately saved me thousands of dollars and years of litigation and other problems. Thank you Mr. Wallpe. If more attorneys were as open and direct as you are, there would be much more confidence in the legal system.

I had a great experience with Terry McCormick as my divorce lawyer. He gave excellent advice and didn't make any false promises. I would hire Terry again in a moment's notice if I needed to.

I hired Terry to help me work through a tough time in my life. He was very knowledgeable and honest and didn't sugarcoat anything but he was also nice and there to empathize with me as well. He won't give you any false claims or false hope but tell you how it is and what he thinks. I really appreciated that. We got the outcome I wanted and honestly can say that I might owe him my life. Great guy to work with and less expensive than the other options I had found.

Terry is a great human, and he's extremely good at his job. My husband and I were in a custody battle for his daughter. We had been working with another attorney for years and were frustrated and felt defeated. We started asking our co-workers for advice and three separate people told us to look into Terry McCormick. It was the first part of December and we had court in January. Terry explained he didn't have enough time to take our case, but he met with us for a consultation. In the small amount of time that we spent with him, we left feeling empowered and hopeful again. I knew we needed Terry. Thank God that his schedule shifted around, and he agreed to take our case, which was in Washington County. Terry was organized, punctual, meticulous, prompt, educated, and straightforward. Every single question I had, was answered. If I had a scenario, or a situation I wanted to run past him, his answers were sincere and precise. Terry replied to me quickly and kept me in the loop on everything. The end result: My husband won full custody of his daughter. I could not have asked for a better person to represent my family.

I requested a copy of police records. His secretary and himself said police don't make reports. I called Warrenton OSP and they sent me report no problem. He was talking figures. (Money) I was saying I'm not settling on anything til I get more medical treatment. The shyster called me and resigned from the case. There shysters!

I was rear ended and wanted representation. Having worked in the Auto Insurance Industry, I knew that the Ins. companies job is to pay as little as possible for my injuries and didn't care about me. Mr. "B" listened to me, my concerns and explained the process. I never used an Attorney before in my life, so I was apprehensive, but walked out of his office feeling comfortable with him, knowing I made the right decision. Do exactly what he says, be patient let him do his job and you will be represented properly and have a man working hard for you. He listens and gives you direction and clear explanations. His executive asst. Karen is responsive and very friendly. Thanks to both of you for being on my side.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Astoria, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
