I contacted Mr. Galm about a car accident. He called me back to sort out if we really needed his services and spoke with me by telephone for 20 mnutes. He explained the way the laws would work in our situation and what he would expect to happen. In a situation which had caused a great deal of anxiety for our family, he was able to ease our minds in minutes. We ended up concluding we would not need his help with this situation, but if I ever need a lawyer again for this kind of problem, he will be the one we contact!

Open and direct communication and patient enough to explain things when there is some confusion or question. I trust him to take the correct path not just the profitable one.

Paul went above and beyond for us after my husband was injured in an accident. He was thorough, attentive to all aspects of the case, and kept us informed of all of our options. He brought in experts and carefully examined who was responsible for the accident. What I really appreciated was when other lawyers would have given up, Paul continued to fight for us. We would seek Paul's counsel again if we needed legal representation.

Having to obtain a lawyer is not something anyone looks forward to. Quite possibly it is right up there with taking your car into a auto repair shop when you know nothing about cars. In my lifetime I have had a few bad experiences with, attorneys to know the difference, between a good attorney and a bad attorney. Unfortunately it cost me allot of money to learn those lessons the hard way. My experience with Paul has always been outstanding. His soft demeanor when needed is what I liked most because facing a duii or reckless charge in itself is terrifying. I have always had a great outcome with any and all legal matters from personal criminal defense issues to sending business referrals for simple legal advice. All the referrals I have sent Paul for criminal defense such as harassment, restraining orders, DUIIs and personal injury have all had great outcomes and would use Paul again. Referring a lawyer can end a friendship, or business relationship quickly. So I don't say this lightly, Paul Galm is a solid quality person who you can trust to get the job done. I appreciate an honest straightforward lawyer, and Paul is just that.

One of the most honest attorneys I've ever worked with. Actually responded and did the work even after getting paid fully.....unlike most of the attorneys I've had the displeasure of working with.

For the last twenty years I have had a charge on my record that prohibitted my personal and families growth. Although it was a misdemeanor it was a major hurdle. Mr. Scorough was honest, compassionate. My record was taken care of in five months. He kept his word and I am forever grateful.

When wrongfully sued in a civil case, I really did not know what to do. I contacted 4 different attorneys. The 1st one would not even hear the details about the case unless I paid him up front 1st. The other 3 after hearing the case asked me if I only any real property, ... when hearing no, they said to me, "it's not about your innocence, plead guilty and file bankruptcy." In a world where money is the bottom line and the common denominator, Roger was the only attorney who really listened to my case and asked pertinent questions and researched before informing me of the various options we had before us. He was the only attorney who seem to at all interested in me as a person and understood how guilt or innocence played and ones overall life. He was the only attorney to inform me of the complete landscape of my case. And took the time to explain to me, in a respectful manner why some of my immediate feelings and ideas for proceeding in the case were not prudent nor valuable in establishing my innocence. At the end of this exhausting experience and trial, Roger truly rose above and beyond. He not only one my case but exonerated my innocence. One never plans finding yourself in a heinous lawsuit, if you are looking for an individual who knows the law, will advocate and fight for you, and who will not treat you like a case number, and is not there only to make a buckā€¦ Roger Scarborough is the champion you seek.

Last month I referred a close family friend to Steve Burke for help with a real estate dispute. My friend recently told me that she was blown away by the high level of service she received. She said Steve answered her calls personally, knew exactly what to do, and quickly helped her recover all the money she was owed. I can't thank Steve and the attorneys at Case & Dusterhoff enough for helping a friend in need!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Beaverton, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
