Both Kyle and his assistant have been difficult to reach, at best. I pay for advice which also appears to change depending on his whim of the day. I paid for advice A for what would happen should X come true. X came true, and his advice A changed to B contingent on Y happening. Y happened, and now his advice has changed to C. I had already expressed my dissatisfaction about him being hard to reach, and last time he asked me for additional information based on responses from the other party. When I sent him the information, I still got no response. I feel like I"m constantly ghosted. I'm not sure what I'm paying for, but it's clear I'm not getting my moneys worth. I've paid almost $2,000 for getting yanked around. I'd like my money back, but ... lawyers.

I knew my divorce was going to be difficult and drag out. I interviewed 4 lawyers and knew I would be in good hands with Joel Kent. Kyle was the other lawyer put on my team. I liked him immediately. I liked his calm manner, his organization, his creative and out of the box thinking, his staff's organization.......they are a well oiled machine. When going through divorce for the first time....you don't know what you don't know and it's critical to have representation that can guide you through this process and obtain the best results possible. Kyle has the knowledge, expertise and confidence that you want in a lawyer to maneuver through this unchartered, emotional territory. His calm and collect manner is so refreshing during such an emotionally charged time. Also, when you spend so much time with someone, you really get to know them. Kyle is ethical and a good person. He is excellent at setting expectations of the process and potential outcome - this comes with his experience. Kyle was accessible, knowledgeable and quick turn around on strategy or moving in a different direction. Unfortunately, my divorce ended up in a private trail after 3 failed mediations. The amount of preparation Kyle and his team did to prepare for trail was very impressive and the organization was more impressive. I was so proud to have him as my lawyer. All credit goes to Kyle and team for the results of my final judgement and his top notch representation. Thank you Kyle!

Bethany Ace is truly exceptional attorney due to her responsiveness, caring nature, and attention to detail. I felt safe knowing that the information that Bethany provided me with was timely and correct. She was also able to deliver sensitive information in a caring manner, where I felt I was in adecision making partnership regarding sensitive issues. She is honest, reliable, professional, and completed the ' jobs' on several occasions in a timely and professional manner. I recommend Bethany Ace without reservation.

When I first started the search for legal representation in 2022 (divorce, parenting time, and custody) , David came highly recommended. Unfortunately, he was not accepting new clients at that time, and of course I now know why. He is the Attorney to hire!! I was so fortunate that when I needed legal representation this time, David was willing to take on my case for a high stakes, long distance (OR to FL) parenting time modification.  From the first interaction that I had with David, he was personable and professional. David was very responsive to communication, and was very organized. David listened to my concerns as a mom, and truly became an advocate for my daughter. I never felt the need to justify my requests or concerns to David because he was so compassionate. David was straight forward and realistic about possible outcomes. He offered me legal advice to any challenging encounter that I had, and I truly believe that had a great impact on the outcome of my case. He empowered me as a client!  Ultimately, this modification went to trial and was presented before a judge. David said "this is go time. I will do the heavy lifting, you be mom" and that was when I knew he was a confident litigator. I was blown away by David's presentation in court; he was professional, prepared, and respected by both opposing council and the judge. Nothing ever felt last minute, no corners were cut, and no detail was overlooked. He became so familiar with my case and exhibits, strategized with the details of the case, and provided me with excellent trial preparation. This led to a very favorable outcome in court and I am SO thankful for that!  David and his legal assistant, Chris Cutshaw were VERY diligent and efficient with my funds. When I received detailed invoices showing the work done on my case, I never had to question anything! Not to mention, every single dollar spent was worth it to be represented by David and his team.  David and Chris deserve more than 5 stars! They are qualified and excellent at what they do, and I will recommend them to anyone seeking representation for complex family law matters!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bend, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
