I recently contacted Sonia Ickes to represent my daughter, who has been fighting Glioblastoma Multiforma, Stage 4 brain cancer since 2016. My daughter also had a stroke (caused by the past radiation treatments of her brain cancer) in December 2018 which caused her to become legally blind. My daughter needed to be on disability through the Social Security Administration so that she could also obtain Medicare for her treatments. Sonia had represented clients in the past on Social Security disability and did such an amazing job that I wanted to hire her to represent my daughter. I was wise in my choice of Sonia Ickes. Sonia agreed to take the case. She was very thorough, kind, and competent. She was always available to take questions (we had many), and she got the claim into the Social Security Administration quickly. My daughter received her Social Security Disability in just a few weeks. We could not have done this without Sonia. Sonia is a really intelligent, caring, and highly competent attorney. I can't say enough good about Sonia and her professionalism.

Ms. Ickes did a terrible job during the time I hired her to represent me. She chose her own course; never kept me informed; did not prepare me for hearing; instead of doing her job in the courtroom, she chit chatted with the opposing attorney. When the hearing had a negative outcome, she did not counsel or advise me of next steps. Shoddy paperwork. Be forewarned.

No words can clearly express my gratitude to Sonia Huntsman-Ickes. She has been my attorney on 2 very tough cases. One in which she protected my rights as a mother and fought for the best interest of my children. She won that case, hands down, and kept our family together. The 2nd case, we are still in the middle of and she amazes me everyday with her dedication to the case and compassion for what I have been through. She does not procrastinate, but gets things done quickly. When she brings your case to opposing councel and the judge, she is very prepared and offers clear and understandable evidence. She is incredibly smart and knows the laws. And what she isnt sure about, she researches and learns every aspect. She works very hard for your case, is very easy to get ahold of and returns all calls and emails immediately. She is passionate about her clients and offers great compassion. My life would be very different without her assistance. I will be forever grateful to her. I have had attorneys in the past and no one has ever offered such great dedication to the cause. You can do no better than Sonia. You will never regret hiring her. She is worth more than money can ever buy and she is worth every penny of her time. My life is forever changed and protected because of Sonia Huntsman-Ickes. Forever.

Rex was amazing. He was understanding of my situation and was very professional. I was worried about being judged because I needed to file bankruptcy, but he was courteous and made me feel comfortable. He helped me with all questions I had about the process and offered to help me with any future credit report questions. I would highly recommend Mr. Daines as a bankruptcy attorney,

Wayne represented me in a case involving me tripping and falling on a raised panel on a sidewalk and breaking my jaw in 3 places. Wayne was most professional dealing with the insurance companies and the people involved in this case. He got me a satisfied settlement. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy or a more professional attorney. Wayne knows his stuff. I would recommend his services to anyone who needs a good attorney. He even reduced his own wages so I could walk away with more money. What Attorney does that? Thank You so much Wayne.

Wayne and his staff helped me come to a settlement agreement with an Insurance company that I had been working with on my own. Although the settlement was less then I felt was appropriate it was more then I had been able to negotiate on my own. In addition, Waynes fees were very fair and reasonable. I would not hesitate to use Wayne again or refer him to any of my friends or family.

Wayne Hawn was a fantastic attorney. I first met with Wayne in Portland, OR. He traveled up here from Bend, OR to meet me and discuss what happened. He was very caring and confident in my case, thus I hired him a few days later and began the process. As this was my first time being involved with a lawyer, my understanding of the process was minimal. Wayne knew how to properly convey and illustrate each step along the way. He was a true teammate throughout the entire year of our case. He laid out what he believed was to occur and 95% of the time, it happened. I would recommend Wayne for any and all cases. If you're searching for a lawyer, give him a call and meet up with him. I am sure at that point you'll realize how experienced he is. Thanks again Wayne, Your friend

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bend, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
