I have retained Devin twice now in an on going custody battle. Each time we have won. Both court appearances involved the enforcement of parenting time filed from my child’s father. The second appearance was much more complex. I had chosen to leave the state with my child although there was an existing parenting plan and court order in place. Although I had very good reasons to relocate, I had a good chance of being in a lot of trouble with the courts if I didn’t have Devin on my side to articulate to the courts that it was in my child’s best interest. Trying to relocate to a different state with a child is one of the hardest and almost impossible things to accomplish. And Devin came into the court room well prepared and exceeded all of my expectations. Ultimately the judge did not order me or my child back to Oregon, I was not ordered to make up any parenting time (it had been over a year since my daughter saw her father), and he was given very limited time with our daughter. We were given everything we asked the judge for. I could never thank Devin enough for his expertise and fighting for my daughters safety and well being. When it came to closing arguments in court, I could tell Devin took my case personal. It felt like he really cared, and it wasn’t just “another case” If you are looking for an amazing attorney that is knowledgeable and that will fight for you, it is Devin!

I hired Mr Driver as my attorney to represent me for an increase in parenting time with my 9 year old son. Without a doubt the best money I ever spent. Mr Driver is ethical, hard working and 100% devoted his clients. He is impressive to watch in a court room. Highly recommend his law firm.

I met with Mr. Driver initially for a divorce consult. He was efficient and knowledgeable about the process of divorce and was able to provide direct and clear answers to my questions. I arrived feeling deeply concerned about how to get my divorce done, having struggled with the paperwork myself. Mr. Driver was able to provide calm and clear guidance, demystify the process and simplify the paperwork for me. He was able to communicate with me by email, which allowed me to keep working my full-time job while negotiating divorce paperwork details during breaks. This took a huge load off my shoulders knowing I had someone handling the legal aspect of things and looking out for me. Ultimately the divorce was completed within 2 months, and I am grateful that it was kept simple and amicable. What a relief! I'm thankful that I found him when I did, and I highly recommend Devin Driver as a divorce attorney.

Highly competent and experienced attorney who thoroughly prepares and strategizes to achieve favorable outcomes for clients
“Devin gathered and sorted the evidence in a very complex case. He applied the evidence efficiently to the prior judgement and used pertinent case law to very effectively present the findings.”
2
Excellent communicator who listens to clients, explains the legal process clearly, and is accessible and responsive
“Devin did a fantastic job explaining the legal process and everything that would happen and why. He was honest and realistic about what to expect and ultimately we won our case.”
3
Compassionate and caring attorney who understands the personal nature of legal matters and supports clients through difficult times
“He has both which is sometimes hard to find. His calm demeanor was just what we needed for my elderly Mom during a very difficult time.”
4
Efficient and cost-conscious, avoiding unnecessary billable hours
“He was careful with our case and did not rack up any unnecessary hours.”
5
Skilled negotiator and advocate, able to reach favorable agreements with opposing parties
“There were several occasions when Devin went above and beyond the call of duty to help, even working with the opposing attorney to reach agreement.”
Cons
1
Occasional concerns about overcharging and not delivering sufficient value for the fees charged
“He over charges, and does the bare minimum in terms of work. I was charged nearly $4,000 for a custody case that I was told would cost me around ”
2
Rare instances of not adequately representing client's interests or failing to fight hard enough for their rights
“Devin failed me miserably and now I have a huge mountain to move to fix what he complacently allowed to snowball because he is a poor excuse of an attorney. He could have stood up for my rights as they were getting walked over but he sat there and did nothing!”

I wish Lynn still practiced law. I have been in the other side of him in the past and he was very good at what he did. I hunted him down and was fortunate enough to have him do a consultation for child custody with myself and my mom on video chat. He took so much time and care and answered ALL of our questions. He then pointed us in the direction of a wonderful attorney who is also amazing at what she does. Everything worked out in a timely fashion and both very reasonably priced. He also responds quickly to your emails. Thank you so very much!

This firm rates 5 stars. They are very responsive and willing to listen. They work hard to do research and solve problems. Their fee schedule is reasonable and in line with other firms in the area. I worked with Max Whittington and was more than satisfied with his work ethic and professionalism. I highly recommend this firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Grants Pass, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
