Too often you see a public defender fail to advocate for their client’s cause. That is not the case with her. She is not only very knowledgeable but she cares and she shows compassion despite working against long odds. Great experience from start to finish. Thank you Jennifer!

Terrible communication, way more reactive than proactive. She took on my case 1 year ago, and the only responses I can get are...”nothing new yet.” On a good note, Jennifer is very personable, and extremely knowledgeable. Just because I feel she was not optimal for my specific needs, doesn’t mean she isn’t perfect for yours.

Jennifer handled my DUII case, attended the administrative hearing on my behalf, and was keen enough to find a technical error in the procedures that resulted in a judgement in favor of not suspending my drivers license. While handling the case, Jennifer demonstrated high professionalism, objectivity and knowledge in the subject matter, I highly recommend her.

Ms. Robins did more for me in 24 hours than any attorney I have ever dealt with in the past on non-criminal matters and with my unfortunate case I dealt with 6 years ago that involved a criminal matter where I was in trouble for the first time in my adult life. All of the good things said about her in other feedback comments on this AVVO site are true. She helped me through consultation, to get my expungement process moving finally after being wronged after-the-fact by the Washington County 'judicial system' that left me for years in limbo. She offered to stay informed with my case and process and I will definitely do that because she sounded like she cared a lot about my future as a human being as I want to start over in life or at least begin a new chapter in my life. For those who don't know the 'system', it is hard to find top-notch attorneys who are defense attorneys but Jennifer is the exception here. I would recommend to anyone to consult with her and then if agreed, to hire her for your case. She is genuine all the way and a great defense attorney. I know this because I have been let down before by attorneys who were only after big money or treated me like I was just another NUMBER for their case load. She is not like that at all and puts the case and you as her client, FIRST. That is the way it is supposed to be and she is that way, thank god. Thanks again to Jennifer Robins !!

Jennifer was VERY helpful during a time when I was confused and worried about what the next steps were in the whole DUII process. She is very knowledgable and made sure that she was available whenever I needed to talk or had any questions.

James Goldstein handled a very difficult divorce case for me. My case went to trial and, and after a full day in court we prevailed. He is very honest, gives very realistic advice, and fights hard for his clients. I felt very comfortable and confident with him throughout the process. His staff is extremely professional and hard working as well. I highly recommend James Goldstein!

Jim did an exemplary job working in my defense on a protection order. He understands that there are two sides to every story and that when dealing with people there can be emotions and accusatory language confusing a legal system that generally lacks accountability when placed in a compromising scenario. Jim has an expertise as a defense attorney and quickly understood my concerns, the law, and the best path forward to help me. Over the years I figured I called 50+ lawyers until I found Jim. I needed Jim's help and I just wish I could have found him sooner.

She is smart and fights for what is right. She won my case in about 10 minutes. She walked into the courtroom spoke the truth and everyone shut up and the judge dismissed the case and walked out. It was amazing! Talk about answered prayer. She was my angel,

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hillsboro, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
