I had no idea how to find and retain an effective defense attorney, and ultimately hired John based on reviews like the one I'm about to submit here...what other metric could I use? He's a straight shooter with a wealth of experience. He kept me up to speed as each step of a grueling, bureaucratic process played out (my ordeal began mid-pandemic, allowing the state to redefine my 'right to a speedy trial'). I was confident in how I wanted to handle my defense, but adjusted course several times based on his input. I leaned heavily on his knowledge and experience when the time came for trial, and he didn't let me down. I sometimes wonder how things might have played out had I hired a different attorney. I'm glad I didn't. It could not have gone any better.

John is the best trial lawyer Out there. Major Swag and has a great respectful reputation around the court house with everyone. John does not take short cuts and will do everything in his power to make sure you get the best representation for your case. I was charged with multiple measure 11 crimes in Washington County Oregon and after two years of working with John and his top notch Private Investigators I was found Not Guilty on all counts! John will go the extra mile and he truly cares about his clients. Not to mention John is Very competitive, and does not like to lose! John definitely went above and beyond! From the time he was hired, all the way to the end of my case (that we won!) he had great communication, there wasn't a time when i didn't know what to expect. Always gave me options, and the pros and cons to each, along with great suggestions on how to move forward. He kept his phone line open for me to ask questions on the case. If he was busy, always called back. He also just checked in and made sure i was doing alright. Which was big for me in trusting his process. John communicated with my other lawyers to make sure the dates weren't conflicting with each other, if they did he had it figured out within times notice. He's very quick and on it, even while juggling many other cases. Overall the best experience with a lawyer i've had.

Upon meeting John, I could tell that he was confident. That is very important to me as he was feeling my adult son, a young black male. He represented him with facts and was open about possibilities and the direction of the case.

Honestly? I don’t know where to begin. As a community advocate working within Portland’s Black community, I was notified of an urgent legal matter. The life and freedom of a young, bright and ambitious man was in the balance. Atty. John Gutbezahl was referred by a friend. I called John a bit leary and not knowing what to expect. The situation was time sensitive and due to the social and racial components of this particular situation I knew an attorney familiar with those nuances was needed. So, I called John. He listened. I shared with him the time sensitivity of the situation and asked if he were available to take this on. John agreed and when he quoted me the cost I asked him two times to repeat the cost. He charged a one time retainer fee and worked on this case just as hard as if I paid him a million dollars. John is personable and doesn’t talk over your head. His courtroom presentation is impeccable. I was struck by his expansive knowledge of the law and its proper application is mind blowing. I could go on and on about Attorney John Gutzebahl. In the final analysis and thanks to John, the young man was found NOT guilty on both counts. I am indebted to this rare attorney who truly cares

I hired John after consulting with seven other lawyers. John was the only one who didn’t make me feel like he was in it for a pay day and took the time to listen to my case. He understood my situation and was hard at work from the minute that I hired him. It was an extremely difficult time for me and my family because the charges I was charged with came with a minimal sentence of 5 years. Not only is John a hard working lawyer but he is very well known and respected in the court house by judges, DA’s and other lawyers. He was very straight forward with all information, the possibilities, and options that came with my case. I never once felt in the dark or out of the loop. John always kept me up to date. John was not only my lawyer but my friend and companion throughout this entire process. I can truly say he goes above and beyond for his clients. Out of the seven charges I was charged with John got six of them dismissed and settled on a misdemeanor charge. Which he will help expunged from my record as well. By far the best case scenario in this situation. I would recommend John to anyone who is ever in need of legal representation and wants a lawyer who they can trust. John is the most professional and hard working lawyer I’ve ever worked with. I was referred to John by previous clients and I hired John. My son was going to be sentenced to 30 years for what was said he did. John went the extra mile to get his conviction down to 72 months with time served he only has to serve 4 1/2 years. Now that’s what you call dedication to his clients. I highly recommend John and if you really are dealing with very serious charges John is the lawyer who knows the law. I was very pleased with how the outcome of my case turned out. We took it all the way to trial and won! John is great in advocating for his clients and very attention to detail in his work. I found myself in a horrible situation being falsely accused for something that could have ruined all my hard work and my reputation. I would have lost everything. I highly recommend John. He is calm and reassuring during a time of caos and uncertainty. I was going through a battle with my ex wife and facing multiple serious charges in multiple counties. I was scared because I thought even though they are false accusations there’s no way they will believe me over her she’s a great actor. John reassured me constantly throughout the 2 year court battle and got my charges in one county dismissed and won in trial on the other charges. He is very technical and has a great presence in the court room. As well as being very well respected by all of his peers.
