I had the privilege of working with Rhett Bernstein, and I couldn't be more impressed with his dedication and professionalism. From the very beginning, he demonstrated a sincere interest in my well-being, taking the time to understand my situation on a personal level. Throughout our interactions, it was evident that he genuinely cared about me as a person, not just another client. One thing that truly stood out was his commitment to ensuring that I was fully informed about every aspect of my case. He patiently explained all my options, walking me through the legal intricacies in a way that was easy to understand. His clarity and expertise instilled confidence in me, allowing me to make informed decisions with peace of mind. What truly sets Rhett apart is his willingness to go above and beyond for his clients. He didn't just provide legal advice; he actively worked alongside me, guiding me through the decision-making process and offering invaluable insights every step of the way. His dedication to my case was unwavering, and he spared no effort in ensuring that I received the best possible outcome. Even after our initial consultations, Rhett and Sommer continued to check in regularly, demonstrating a genuine concern for my well-being. He consistently went the extra mile, exploring all avenues to help resolve any lingering concerns or issues that arose. His proactive approach and accessibility reassured me that I was in good hands throughout the entire process. Thanks to Rhett Bernstein’s expertise, compassion, and unwavering support, what could have been a daunting legal journey became a manageable and even empowering experience. I cannot recommend him highly enough to anyone in need of legal assistance. He's not just a remarkable lawyer; he's a compassionate advocate who truly puts his clients first."

I got into trouble with a DUI and didn't know where to turn for help. The call to Mr Bernstein was the best decision I made in my time of need. Mr Bernstein and his assistant Sommer wasted no time in coming to my defense. They were able to ease my mind and make me feel like I wasn't going to be alone through a tough time. Mr Bernstein and Sommer work with speed and professionalism. They possess a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience, and they are truly great to have in your corner. Mr Bernstein was able to prevent me from losing my driver's license, got me into the diversion program, and gave me the counsel to get my traffic citations dropped. I am very happy with their representation, and would highly recommend Mr Bernstein and his team to anyone! Thanks guys!

I would like to try take this opportunity to reach out to those who may be in need of representation by an experienced attorney. I personally found myself in such a situation where I needed first rate advise and an attorney who saw me not solely as a client, but as a person who made a mistake and deserved to be treated with compassion and respect. Even though this was a trying time, it was very refreshing for me to know that Mr. Bernstein and his legal assistant Sommer Saunders were on my team. I had several meetings face to face as well as phone calls asking if I needed anything or had questions. I was never alone. The law office of Rhett Bernstein, I found, is very in tune with the statutes of law as well as having many years expertise with the court system. My advise to the reader of this statement is to make the call to Mr Bernstien without delay. It will be the difference for you.

I had just been through a hip implant revision due to the first one being recalled. After my first visit with Keith, I knew I had made the right choice. There are so many ways to describe good people, all of them apply to Keith. We agreed up front that I would carry-on with my life without much interaction with Keith, he would just do what was necessary to get a good outcome. And good outcome it was. Good numbers, short time frame, and life goes on.

I was injured in a slip and fall case back in 2014. When the insurance company would not quit harassing me, I decided I needed an attorney. I live in Seattle, so I started there. I called every attorney that was also licensed in Oregon (the accident happened in Oregon). I must have spoken to at least 15 attorneys who laughed me off because it was a slip and fall. They didn't want to hear about it, even when I knew they didn't have to prove liability, just damages. Some attorney in Oregon referred me to Jose. He listened to me, heard me tell him how liability was already clear and that damages was the only issue that needed to be resolved. Because of this, I got a settlement that was more than any slip and fall that I had ever seen. In fact, I have never seen a slip and fall win. If you have a case that you think will never be won, call Jose, and tell him that Terry sent you.

Jose was excellent in handling my auto accident case. He was very knowledgeable and personable throughout the process, and was always available to answer questions and help me navigate through the complex nature of my case. His team in the office was also stellar, and made the whole process go smooth. Although I of course wish I was not hit in a auto accident and hurt, I'm glad I had Jose on my side through the deposition and mediation, and that I was able to avoid going to court. I was satisfied with the settlement I received. I would highly recommend Jose to anyone looking for a personal injury lawyer.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lake Oswego, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
