I highly recommend Attorney Phillip Jones of Goldberg Jones-Divorce for Men! I had a highly contentious, long, ugly custody battle and the first attorney that I hired had to get off my case because he said it was just getting too complicated for him. Without going into detail, I was distraught and losing hope to say the least. I contacted Goldberg Jones-Divorce for Men and was assigned Attorney Phillip Jones. Going with Goldberg Jones was the best decision I ever made! Phillip was very knowledgeable of family law, father's rights and knows how to get positive results in the courtroom. Phillip worked hard to help me get custody of my son back and for that I can't thank him enough. Phillip was always available to answer my questions and concerns. Having an attorney who understands the intricacies of family law and advocates fiercely can truly make a difference. I wish I would have hired Phillip in the very beginning! I would also like to say how friendly and helpful the front desk staff is.

IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED to HIRE Phil D. Jones as an attorney. He was appointed as the legal representative for my partner Jeff Sommer but failed to communicate with the opposing counsel for a period of 124 days. This lack of action led to the opposing counsel initiating a lawsuit against my partner for attorney fees, a case in which the Opposing counselor got awarded attorney fees for 124 day NO COMMUNICATION . Additionally, Phil D. Jones inaccurately asserted that jeff had instructed him to avoid communication with the opposing counsel. In reality, my partner had only advised that he should not respond to opposing counselor unless he communicate with him first. ( simple request) Phil D. Jones deliberately misconstrued this advice as authorization to refrain from any engagement with the opposing counsel and neglected to inform jeff of the attempts made by the opposing counsel to contact him. Despite our continuous efforts to improve communication among Phil D. Jones, the management team, the client, and the opposing counsel, all attempts proved futile. I would not recommended to hire Phil D. Jones you will lose your case with him.

I had the pleasure of working with Phillip Jones on my child custody hearing, an expensive one - but worth EVERY cent. Phillip gave me advice at every turn, sometimes drastically contradicting what I would have thought to do. I am so very glad I listened to him and followed his recommended approach. After 2 years of a current life with 50/50 shared custody and custodial involvement, for my 7 year old daughter, my x-wife attempted to uproot her and take full custody. Mainly to satisfy a vengeance toward me I guess. She was defeated handily. All the while I wanted to point out her half truths and downright lies, but Phillip suggested that may take focus off other important areas. This was all true, and the judge caught her lying without me pointing it out. All things considered, I would highly recommend Mr Jones and follow his advice. Best of luck. Sincerely, Choncy Jones (no relation)

Jennifer was court appointed to me, and I feel fortunate to have had her assigned to my case. Her investigator was such a positive player on her team. I was told that Jennifer was a “Bulldog” and would work hard for me. She did just that! Having serious charges I was faced with.. my gal got my caseDismissed! Honestly she changed my life!

I’ve never needed a lawyer for anything so I searched for lawyers near me that could assist with my needs, and Graham Fisher was the first one I looked at. From the first phone call, and then in-person meeting just a few hours later, it was clear I didn’t need to look any further. Graham is professional, kind, extremely responsive, and helpful every step of the way. I don’t believe I could have found someone better - I would definitely recommend Graham!

After determining that the only viable option for us in a dispute with our neighbor, was hiring an attorney, we found Mr. Hammond thru search engines and reviews. Our choice to go with Mr. Hammond fit our situation well. Mr. Hammond had a very calming and reassuring presence, that helped greatly with navigating us through this process. He was honest with what to expect and came up with some very creative and resourceful options for us to consider. His knowledge and understanding was greatly appreciated. We would have him represent us again, if needed. S. Schroeder, Oregon

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
