I considered legal action after being injured, but didn’t know if my case had merit. After consulting with Alex Wylie I had confidence that my concerns were valid, so I decided to go ahead. My case just settled and I am very happy with the outcome. I would rate Alex A+ throughout this process. He was extremely knowledgeable about the law and communicated effectively. He talked me through issues as they came up in a way that helped me make decisions. He was responsive to any calls or emails I initiated. He was friendly and easy to work with. I feel fortunate to have worked with Alex Wylie on this matter. His dedication and expertise helped me prevail. If you are considering legal action, give Alex a call. He is someone you can rely on.

I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional legal representation I received from Alex Wylie and his incredible team. After being involved in an extremely challenging car accident, his team navigated me through every step of the lawsuit and insurance process with professionalism and immediate responses to all my questions. And believe me, I had a LOT. It was my first and hopefully last car accident where I was seriously injured and needed to use insurance for medical reasons. I ended up needing back surgery and years of physical therapy to get out and about again. From the first day, Alex and his team took charge, handling all the paperwork and facilitating clear communication between me and the insurance companies. Their thoroughness and attention to detail were nothing short of remarkable, ensuring that every aspect of my case was meticulously prepared. Throughout the two-year ordeal, Alex's kindness and understanding were a constant source of reassurance. He not only fought tooth and nail on my behalf but also took the time to explain each development and strategy in a way that I could understand. Their efforts culminated in a successful court decision where we were awarded the maximum compensation possible. I wholeheartedly recommend Alex to anyone seeking legal representation involving car accidents. His dedication, expertise, and genuine care for me set him apart as an outstanding advocate for justice. Thank you, Alex, for your exceptional service and support throughout this challenging time.

I googled best Portland DUI attorney the minute I got out of Jail and Andy popped right up on Google. I credit him and the treatment center, Progressive Counseling Service (Dr. Patterson) with saving my life, my house, my job, my kids, and most importantly my freedom through hand in hand collaboration on goal setting and treatment plans. He explained not only the legal laws and hoops I would be facing, but also held my hand through the entire process quelling my anxiety and giving me hope and my faith. If you want your life back after a minor Mistake, Call Andy. I consider him a life-long associate! #Sober

Andy is straight forward no-nonsense lawyer who knows his stuff. I'm from out of state and I truly couldn't have asked for better representation. I've never had such a positive experience with a lawyer given the circumstances under which we met. Highly, highly recommend for any type of criminal defense. Especially violence allegations. Also his staff is top notch. Thank you all

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
