Pros
1
Personable, professional, and dedicated to getting the best result
“Jason is personable, professional and dedicated to getting the best result without being a high pressure jerk.”
2
Effective in handling the case and securing a favorable outcome
“I got the most I legally could have as a result of my accident suit and there was little to no stress or work for me.”
3
Knowledgeable about the law and able to identify and act on legal issues
“Mr. Steen pointed out a legal issue, immediately filed a motion which led to my case being dismissed a week later, Mr. Steen was well versed in the law and the DA reviewed his motion and conceded the point.”
4
Responsive and kept the client informed throughout the process
“Correspondence was challenging, frequent and critical to this case. Looking over the history of the case, there was never more than 1-2 business days required over the mailing time involved and most was able to be done electronically.”
5
Able to handle cases involving multiple states and complex legal situations
“There were unique challenges as a result of working between two different states with differing laws and regulations but thanks to his awareness of this, all of the paperwork properly reflected the common milestones that needed to be reached in a way that was clear to everyone.”
Cons
1
Lack of responsiveness and communication
“Never calls back/ answers, always late, haven't heard from him in ove”
2
Mishandling of client's case and providing inaccurate information
“He reassured me once again, this time by saying and I quote, "ya, there are a few of you, but out of all of my guys in there, your the one that better not be losing any sleep over this because you are going home." Which confirmed my belief in him and the fact that the charges would get beat in motions and I wouldn't see a trial as I had stated to Mr. Steen from the very beginning that I wouldn't sign a plea agreement or a waiver for my 60 days fast and speedy trial. At 60 days I was still in custody and on my 61st day I was in court, but not for what I had thought.”

He represented me in a case that shouldn’t have made it to the grand jury, but needless to say they did indict me at which time I was placed in custody, Mr. Steen let the district attorney hold me passed my 60 days and didn’t raise that as an issue, during my stay in jail he continued to reassure me that I had nothing to worry about it was a slam dunk case, there were several other guys in custody that had Mr. Steen which I let him know that I knew he had a lot of cases on his desk from the public defenders office and I wouldn’t bother him, he reassured me once again, this time by saying and I quote, “ya, there are a few of you, but out of all of my guys in there, your the one that better not be losing any sleep over this because you are going home.” Which confirmed my belief in him and the fact that the charges would get beat in motions and I wouldn’t see a trial as I had stated to Mr. Steen from the very beginning that I wouldn’t sign a plea agreement or a waiver for my 60 days fast and speedy trial. At 60 days I was still in custody and on my 61st day I was in court, but not for what I had thought. I assumed a release hearing for violating my 60 days, or even a motion hearing which would have sufficed, but no he had me there to plea bargain which he had no flipped the script and claimed that i would most definitely lose in trial and get sent to prison for at least 56 months, my best bet is to take the plea and get a suspended sentence. This isn’t a personal attack on Mr. Steen, just stating the FACTS as they happened. Thank you, Robin

Simply the best experience - Jason is personable, professional and dedicated to getting the best result without being a high pressure jerk. I got the most I legally could have as a result of my accident suit and there was little to no stress or work for me. And my original attorney would have ended up costing me money instead. Highly recommended

I reside out of state so it was critical for me to work with someone who could work this case through without my being available in person at all after my initial appearance. He explained the case and all the potential outcomes by both severity and likelihood. Once we agreed on the approach, he verified all of the milestones and kept me informed of each future date. Correspondence was challenging, frequent and critical to this case. Looking over the history of the case, there was never more than 1-2 business days required over the mailing time involved and most was able to be done electronically. There were unique challenges as a result of working between two different states with differing laws and regulations but thanks to his awareness of this, all of the paperwork properly reflected the common milestones that needed to be reached in a way that was clear to everyone. The one significant issue that came up was due to an outside agency failing to file routine reports correctly which led to a Motion to Show Cause. I got a call from him about the pending motion 2 days before I had a copy in the mail. By that point I'd already gathered my copies of all of the relevant information and it was on its way. It allowed him to get the case successfully dismissed at that the same hearing instead of waiting for the original court date the following month. Ultimately, I always felt that I was well taken care of and, especially, that none of the myriad moving parts in the case were ever in danger of falling through the cracks or being missed. I hope that any future attorneys with whom I work will meet the same level of care and competence.

Jason took my case very deep into the judicial period of time in which the case was at. Even still managed to not only help me get the treatment I deserved but also stoping the state from taking advantage of the fact that I had a public defender.

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
