As soon as I was approached by the government I was terrified. Right away I got into contact with his Firm and Hired Jeff. He’s been a blessing through this 7 year process. In the beginning I was looking at a very scary sentencing, but with all the work he has done over the many years on the case weare coming to a much better situation than 7 years ago. I’m confident in his abilities and can trust to leave everything in his hands. He’s answered all my questions at all hours of the day. He keeps everything blunt and honest and that’s exactly what you need when entering such a situation. He’s helped me keep a cool head during the scary parts. I’m extremely happy with Jeff’s work. I would recommend him to anyone dealing with anything from minor to SEVERE issues. He will be there for you and guide you through the fires of whatever situation you are in.

Mr. Turnoy is easily one of the best attorneys available for criminal defense. My situation was unique, and caused me a great deal of anxiety. My charges were juvenile, but they came back into light decades later. I felt like my life had been turned upside down, and was looking at a more complicatedfuture. Mr. Turnoy eased my worries by being persistent and thorough with all communication. He understood my thought process even if I asked questions that may have been insignificant. He encouraged questions and discourse, and never let me feel like I was in this fight alone. Mr. Turnoy was extremely professional, and absolutely made me feel protected. He is also realistic whenever it comes to the case, so he will be upfront if something is not likely to happen. I would 100% recommend Jeff Turnoy to anyone needing his services. I cannot overstate how much he has helped me and my family over the past two years. He was incredibly easy to work with and always available to hear my concerns. I'd rate him higher than 5 stars if I could.

Jeff did an excellent job on our son’s DV case. As soon as he was assigned, things started moving very quickly with visible results in just a few hours. He negotiated with the DDA to make a diversion program available preventing the long term stigma associated with the particular charges on hisrecord. Until his involvement, this option wasn’t available. His communication was professional, compassionate, and sharp. His appearance and demeanor were also polished. I believe both factors help provide tangible results. I can’t recommend him strongly enough.

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced attorneys who are dedicated to their clients
“Jeff is an excellent attorney, as well as smart and knowledgeable. We hired Jeff and the team at Cogan Law to defend our loved one who was wrongfully convicted, won his appeal and recharged. It was refreshing to see that the truth eventually won out and that justice was served by our loved one having a NOT GUILTY verdict.”
2
Responsive and accessible attorneys who are available to answer questions and provide guidance
“Jeff was always accessible, professional, and treated me like a person who made a mistake, who did their time, and who is ready to move on with their life.”
3
Attorneys who fight hard and go the extra mile to achieve the best possible outcome for their clients
“Jeff and his team are amazing. I hired Jeff for relief from registration as a sex offender. He is very quick to respond to any questions asked. He is very knowledgeable and willing to explain the process in a way you can understand.”
4
Attorneys who are compassionate and understanding, and treat their clients with respect
“Jeff Turnoy needs a slogan, "changing lives, one case at a time." He really changed mine. When I contacted Jeff two years ago, he helped me understand the need for an attorney to help remove me from the registry. Jeff spent countless hours on my behalf in communication with me, researching my case, helping me to understand the court system better and was the reason for my successful outcome.”
5
Attorneys who are honest and upfront about the process and potential outcomes
“Jeff was fully informative throughout the whole process and was very good at communicating my options. His service was second to none!”

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Ryan Scott is the best defense lawyer. After our first meeting I knew for a fact that I was in the best hands I could be in. He’s very intelligent and what sets him apart from the rest is not only his expertise but that he cares a lot. I’m so happy that he took my case. He got me out of jail when the public defenders didn’t want to even try. Now I am not behind any bars. If you’re looking up lawyers to represent you, stop searching now and hire Ryan you will not regret it. Thank you Ryan!

Jennifer was court appointed to me, and I feel fortunate to have had her assigned to my case. Her investigator was such a positive player on her team. I was told that Jennifer was a “Bulldog” and would work hard for me. She did just that! Having serious charges I was faced with.. my gal got my caseDismissed! Honestly she changed my life!

After determining that the only viable option for us in a dispute with our neighbor, was hiring an attorney, we found Mr. Hammond thru search engines and reviews. Our choice to go with Mr. Hammond fit our situation well. Mr. Hammond had a very calming and reassuring presence, that helped greatly with navigating us through this process. He was honest with what to expect and came up with some very creative and resourceful options for us to consider. His knowledge and understanding was greatly appreciated. We would have him represent us again, if needed. S. Schroeder, Oregon

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
