I’ve known Joel since I got in my accident in April of 2022. The chiropractic office that I was going to pushed me to call him emphasizing that he would make sure I was taken care of - and they were completely right. The impact of my accident added so much stress to my already stressful life as a single, working mom who was in school at the time and is now a 1st grade teacher. I felt like I had been spread way too thin and was so grateful to have someone managing my case. He has always been communicative about next steps, responsive when I needed to get ahold of him, understanding when I myself wasn’t great at communicating, and he really fought for me. When the accident happened I didn’t know what to expect in terms of how much money I would be awarded. I did endure a lot of pain and suffering in life because of it, and I do have permanent damage in my spine, but I didn’t expect much to come from it. He got me more than I could have ever imagined. And it started from them offering relatively nothing. Joel has a strong knowledge about how the system works and uses that knowledge to negotiate and continue pushing for his clients. I and my family are forever grateful to Joel and his team for his empathy, continued support, and diligence. I am so thankful that I listened to the advice that brought me to him. If you decide to hire Joel to represent your case, I am excited for you. It was one of the best choices I’ve made.

I was injured in a car accident, and I hired a lawyer without any research or knowledge of what to even look for. The experience was terrible, to say the least. I got false information, lost money I didn’t have and wasted a lot of time with a lot of added stress because I couldn’t get any answers or help. I was lucky enough to know someone else who was already going through the legal process with Attorney David Eder. My conversation with them is what also made me realize I was completely with the wrong firm. I was grateful my case hadn’t already closed and reached out to David. He spent time with me on the phone and in person walking me through everything and answering questions so simply, questions I had been asking the old attorney for the last 1.5yrs! So I switched over to David Eder. David and his partners (Ben Eder, Joel Sturm and Andrew Gust) took over my case and got everything in order. They were able to get the case out of a frozen position into double limits and my health insurance bills were waived. The difference between the first firm and these guys was night and day. I wish I had found them sooner, but I am so blessed to have found them before it was too late! Thank you!

After my husband was tragically hit and killed by a commercial truck, I didn't know what to do. A professional contact recommended I call Thuemmel Uhle & Eder. In my first meeting, I met with all of the partners. While David Eder was the lead, his other partners (Andrew, Ben and Joel) all participated. I could tell that they understood the law, the complexities and were ready to get to work on my family's behalf. As I dealt with the loss of my husband, my lawyers systematically put together the case, including fights over available coverage. I could not have asked for a better group of aggressive legal minds in my corner.

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Jennifer was court appointed to me, and I feel fortunate to have had her assigned to my case. Her investigator was such a positive player on her team. I was told that Jennifer was a “Bulldog” and would work hard for me. She did just that! Having serious charges I was faced with.. my gal got my caseDismissed! Honestly she changed my life!

I’ve never needed a lawyer for anything so I searched for lawyers near me that could assist with my needs, and Graham Fisher was the first one I looked at. From the first phone call, and then in-person meeting just a few hours later, it was clear I didn’t need to look any further. Graham is professional, kind, extremely responsive, and helpful every step of the way. I don’t believe I could have found someone better - I would definitely recommend Graham!

I hired Susan to help me with estate planning documents, a task that was long overdue. Susan and her staff answered all my questions, provided excellent service and I received the documentation in a timely manner. I would definitely hire Res Nova Law again (and will be doing so in the near future).

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
