Kevin, did an excellent job with a multi year very difficult case. It took teamwork, persistence , patience ,and expertise to get us over the finish line. He even recovered some of the legal fees. One year later, Kevin was still there for us. There are many bumps in the road after a divorce settlement. It has been great to have Kevin’s continued support and advise. First class!

I hired Kevin Kelly In 2011 while I was enlisted in the military, stationed overseas, hadn’t seen my son in person for the better part of 2 years, and I was a single male at the time. Kevin always steered me in the right direction and warned me of all possible outcomes with my case. He always was straight forward and honest with me with everything, never leading me down a bad path once. I remember always getting off the phone with Kevin feeling a thousand times better knowing he was working his hardest for me. He always had my sons best interest in mind as well as mine. When it was all said and done I left the courthouse in absolute shock, Kevin had won me my case and more importantly got my son in my hands with custody in a stable home where I knew he was safe. I will forever be grateful for Kevin and the hours of hard work he put in for me.

I have hired Kevin multiple times for legal separation, divorce etc. He plans, executes and follows through exactly what he promises. More than that, he always went above and beyond to help guide me through the emotional, financial and psychological roller coaster that these cases bring with them. His advice and contacts (brokers, agents, finance) beat my expectations. He always was there for my smart, dumb and repeated questions I had in a world that quite frankly confuses me. We have worked together for 9 years and he is not only my attorney, he is my friend.

I sought out Kevin Kellys help this summer with my child support case. I had been trying to deal with resolving back owed and current unpaid child support payments on my own for the past 5 years and had gotten nowhere. It came to a point where my ex husband was disputing my income and was actually trying to have his child support lowered (despite his non payment). I was overwhelmed, to say the least, with the situation as I had just been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was dealing with debilitating symptoms. I can not say enough how happy I am with my decision to hire Kevin for this case. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable and guided me through this process with ease. He was very sensitive and patient with regards to my illness and went above and beyond to insure that I was kept well informed and understanding everything. He always checked in with me on a personal level to see how I was doing and to make sure I was not feeling overwhelmed. He expressed and showed a lot of concern for my well being. Kevin is a man with great integrity. It's obvious he really wants to fight for what is right and just. He is very professional but also personable. I always felt reassured and comfortable. Kevin was easy to get a hold of when I had a question and always quickly returned my phone calls. His assistant Terea was great to work with as well. It was clear how much work Kevin put into my case when we eventually went to court. He was prepared well beyond any expectations I had and we easily won the case. I was awarded not only all unpaid child support but also interest, children's medical expenses, and my ex husband was placed on probation. My child support payments were also increased based on Kevins presented evidence of my illness and disability. Kevin is a stand out in the court room and is quick, assertive, confident, and on top of his game. His performance gave me absolute trust in his abilities and I will seek out Kevin if I ever need his assistance in the future. In addition, Kevin generously spent quite a bit of his own time on tedious time consuming work seeking out reimbursement for attorneys fees by my ex husband. I HIGHLY recommend Kevin Kelly and I will refer family and friends to his services as well. He went above and beyond. Thanks Kevin!

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
