Knowledgeable and helpful in legal matters, particularly for small businesses and startups
“Ben used to work as a graphic designer, and so he was very knowledgeable and helpful to me when I formed and LLC and had him review my standard client contracts.”
2
Effective at simplifying complex legal situations
“I also really appreciated how simply he laid out complex situations for me- it made it much easier to negotiate to the outcome instead of falling back on principle.”
3
Transparent and honest about billing
“Also, since he has experience on the other side of the lawyering table, he is very clear about when he is/isn't billing and absolutely refuses to sneakily charge for brief phone calls and emails.”
4
Invested in the long-term success of clients
“His attitude is along the lines of 'there will be plenty of time for me to make money off you as your business grows', which I think is the perfect attitude for my lawyer to have---he wants to be in it with me for the long haul rather than just a few overpriced, unproductive meetings.”
5
Proactive in understanding client needs and goals
“Specifically, Ben went the extra miles to understand our business needs and goals and because of that he ALWAYS brings something valuable to the table.”

I really enjoyed Ben and his counsel. We went through a stressful negotiation together and he was great about keeping my emotions in check. I also really appreciated how simply he laid out complex situations for me- it made it much easier to negotiate to the outcome instead of falling back on principle.

We found Ben in an online search for a startup lawyer. We met with Ben and were immediately surprised how comfortable he was to speak with. He is friendly, knowledgeable, and a fast worker, which translates into affordable law services. With industry standards in the $300 an hour range, Ben's $200 an hour range is exceptional. Ben helped our startup incorporate, secure health insurance, negotiate employee contracts, NDA's, and more. Ben isn't just our Lawyer, he's a friend. He's available to bounce ideas off as are the rest of his team. The folks at Ben's firm SNS are young and well-informed and interested in the success and growth of your business.

Ben helped me as I went through the process of acquiring a dental practice. I had very little experience working with attorneys prior to this so I didn't really know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised with my experience working with Ben and the team at Slinde Nelson. What I noticed most was Ben's attention to detail and focus. I would not hesitate to recommend Ben Stoller to a colleague or friend.

Ben & his team have done an excellent job helping us make decisions for how to grow and protect our company. Having smart people around you, people who can keep you on track, find solutions and avoid problems BEFORE THEY HAPPEN is top priority. This year we worked intensively with Ben to secure our virtual and intellectual properties. All the licensing and agreements which Ben helped us draft took hours and hours of consideration, planning and research. The hard work paid off with our company having a very successful year as well as huge roll out into 2012 beyond. Specifically, Ben went the extra miles to understand our business needs and goals and because of that he ALWAYS brings something valuable to the table. Bottom Line: Work Great People Like Ben Stoller!

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
