Lucy demonstrated she is not capable of representing those who desire anything other than to throw themselves at the mercy of the court or are simply willing to settle for mediocrity about their representation. Lucy takes on FAR to large a caseload and in turn does not communicate proactively or effectively. She does not answer phone calls, she returns emails and texts when it appears she feels that she has no choice.  She does not follow reasonable client requests regarding providing discovery, exhibits, etc.  She only takes the time to communicate when she knows she has dropped the ball.  Her lack of initiative and professionalism cost me unnecessary time in jail, money, and more importantly frustration.  I am VERY calm and reasonable.  I understand professionalism and attempt to do the best job one can.  I essentially represented myself.  In the end, she provided nothing to my situation.  She added insult to injury by not following through with disputing Lake Oswego Municipal Court from billing me for her court-appointed attorney services.  Short of having a license with the bar I don't know what aptitude she brought to the table. I discourage anyone from placing their future in the counsel of Lucy.

Felt like her case load was to big and she didn't have the time to work on my case let alone respond to my questions I sent in emails or provide me with my full discovery. I felt like she just wanted me to take a plea bergen and be done with me. She might be a good attorney if you hire her or if she believes in your case.

As a first nation I struggle with identity and acceptance of the populations in the Americas in simply making jurisdictions in-laws to over substance substantiate what has happened in history in America does not negate any of the facts on how political framing exist I pray for every first nation in America and I pray that Lucy also heals from stating she had enough hearing about my ancestors for all court-appointed people in the biracial Community we are in a period where our ancestors are and will always be allowed to be discussed. I had to end the relationship a d engagement due to cultural reasons and hope her clients are happy yet in my 1st nation life, we talk soind act and are different. It was very clear in meeting face to face and speaking as a Native only western nows! Not in truth of Our boarding schools some acknowledgements must be done by those whom hold those same standards, that have covered up our peoples stories. I have ptsd anxiety and generational trauma. None of my emails were ever responded too, and I am sorry but our Ancestors abuse is handed down And taught. In reality I pray over understanding of this period in a non western conflict.

She was appointed to a case of a family member of mine. She didn't have to be real, honest or listen to them like she did. She could have been like the more then a few other public defenders in the Clackamas county area that I have seen go through the motions in court but not ever take a minute to listen to what the client is asking or saying. She remembered my family over a year later when I happen to come across her path again. She is so busy and yet gives you the connection you need in a overwhelming time like legal trouble. She is direct and works for what you really say the best she can. I wish she would teach a class for far to many others to are more worried about having lunch after court with that same judge and state D.A pushing you into some plea. She is the change we need!! We love you Lucy!

Ms. Heil was my court appointed attorney. I was nervous because of the reputations of court appointed attorneys. When I was arraigned I was looking around the room noticing the other court appointed attorneys. They looked unkempt, shirts untucked and I did not have a lot of faith in how the process was gonna go. When the judge called my name, Lucy appeared and I was pleasantly shocked. She was polished, professional and looked and sounded like an attorney you would see on television. After my arraignment she scheduled a meeting to meet with me. Instead of meeting at her office, we met where the incident occurred and she drove me around in order to re -enact exactly what happened so she could see what occurred through my eyes. She was incredibly insightful, and she immediately hired an investigator to speak to witnesses to the incident. Most importantly, she believed in me. I was alienated in high school because of the way I look and people always have misconceptions solely based on my appearance. Lucy was able to look beyond that and surmised that I has probably been blamed for something I didn’t do simply because of the way I look. It was pretty amazing how she understood that without me having to tell her. This case is my first encounter with the criminal justice system and it has been the source of so much stress and worry. However, after Lucy was appointed to represent me and after we got to know each other I felt as though a tremendous weight had been lifted off my shoulders. My case went to trial and resulted in me being found not guilty. This case was the source of so much stress and angst for me and my family. Again, I feel like I had won the lottery having Lucy represent me as she is like what I would imagine a $500 per hour attorney would be like. During trial, I was amazed at her ability to clearly make arguments that were easy to understand. The whole experience was a bit surreal as she was so good at trial, I felt like it was again like I was in a tv show, but it was my case. I am so thankful to her and hopefully we won’t ever have to go through another experience like that, but just thinking about her puts a smile on my face. I am forever grateful.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
