Handles cases professionally and keeps clients informed
“I found Sarah to be professional in her handling of my divorce every step of the way, always looking out for my best interest and keeping me informed as to the process.”
2
Maintains a caring and supportive approach
“Very professional attorney. Despite being professional he also makes those he represents feel as if they are family and that he truly cares about your situation.”
Cons
1
Appears to prioritize high-cost, conflict-oriented outcomes over the best interests of the family
“As we worked with her, we started to understand that her counsel was directing us towards the most conflict oriented, highest cost environment possible. Very little of it had to do with the good of our family and children.”
2
Lack of communication and follow-up
“He was to notify us of custody hearing and did not and then he never communicated with us.”
3
Overcharging for services
“Paid $3,000 for a retainer fee for him to go to court for us one time and then we never heard back from him since.”

I retained (McKean Smith) Annelisa's services the day I met her for initial consultation. She was referred to me by a common friend. Annelisa worked with me from start to finish on my divorce, to end my 21 years of marriage, that should've been settled amicably from the get-go, as all I wanted was for there to be no disruption to my kids' (2 teens) lives at home from the parenting plan, and I was ready to give up my house, and 100% child support, and allow both kids to stay with their mother 24/7 for that, with me visiting kids at their home only to care for them when they wanted me to, no different than our usual routine. Yet, somehow conspiracies prevailed and it ended up as a contested divorce that dragged on for over a year, with me having to defend against numerous baseless accusations. It was a real life nightmare to say the least, but fortunately I had my kids and the truth to bank on, and had all the documented evidence needed to fend off every single unfounded accusation, and that's all Annelisa needed to get me the exact results I wanted, with the only difference being that instead of my kids living with their mother in the home 24/7 I now have sole custody of both my kids and they now live with me in the house 24/7, with zero disruption to their lives from the divorce. Annelisa will fight for you and get you the results you deserve. She is very busy, but made time for a 1 on 1 meeting anytime I felt the need for some assurance. Heather, the paralegal, was also very pleasant to work with, and was prompt at responding to my questions. In court, at status check meetings, Annelisa was very clear and concise in her choice of words, and spoke with full confidence, no matter what cheap tactics the opposing counsel used in front of the judge to try to scare me. Annelisa has the experience, is very skilled in her profession, and is very honest and upfront about the possible outcomes. Each time I felt drained and wanted to discuss updates and meet with Annelisa, I left feeling assured and confident that she will get me the best result possible. At one point I felt so frustrated and drained from dealing with the contested divorce that I was willing to give in to all the demands from the opposing party, but Annelisa advised me why that was not a good option, and boy am I glad I listened to her! Annelisa doesn't play any games with the opposing party. She is very straightforward and deals with the opposing party in a very professional manner, and will get you the best results you deserve. For me, that was zero disruption to my kids' lives at home after divorce, and that's exactly what she delivered. My 2 teens are now living with me in my house 24/7, and my life with my kids is as good as it can get... very much at peace! One other thing that stood out in my interactions with Annelisa is that she was always conscious of my financial constraints and questioned the need whenever I requested a 1 on 1 meeting, warned me about additional cost when discussing independent 3rd party services, suggested alternatives to getting the same outcome as a trial, without actually taking it to trial, and even worked with the opposing counsel and the judge to minimize my costs by avoiding certain in-person meetings when the divorce was being finalized. If you have the truth and facts on your side, and anticipate a contested divorce, retaining the services of McKean Smith could end up being the best decision you make. It was for me!

I've been a client of Troy D. Nixon since 2018 after he was referred to me via the OSB's referral program. He handled a family law case for an employee of mine, and was able to reverse what other-wise would've been a railroading of a young man by what has traditionally been a subsection of law which favors the mother. I retained Mr. Nixon shortly thereafter. Troy has helped me navigate Real Estate. Contract and Business Law, has helped my wife gain sole custody of her eldest daughter and get an emergency protective order filed, he's represented my interests in court, and he's a gifted litigator. I'm not Troy's biggest client - not by any stretch, but as a Realtor specializing in development, I've been in my share of litigation, mediation and arbitration. I've had many experiences with larger firms - but Troy has far and away been the most diligent, competent and trustworthy. He's protected my interests, business and reputation from unforeseen threats in ways I hadn't considered - and won the day, with professionalism, tact, and knowledge in and out of court multiple times. He's saved me time and money. I couldn't ask for more.

Stephan Warner took my case when I was about to despair. His guidance and counsel were invaluable to me at a time when I was not at my best. Stephan was infinitely patient with me and made sure I thoroughly understood the process and all the associated issues and options, and the impact of various decisions. The experience and outcome exceeded my expectations in every way. I couldn’t recommend him more strongly.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
