At the corner of professionalism and knowledge, you'll find London's office. She took over my case, communicated very well, and guided me through the process. She knows the law and rules very well. London always conducts herself in a professional way. I would recommend London to anyone going though family legal troubles. 10/10 would recommend.

After having had unpleasant consults with other lawyers who couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the idea that two women might be married and getting a divorce, it was important to me to find a lawyer who understood the queer community and London was that lawyer. She handled my divorce case and was indispensable in helping me get my kids back after my ex absconded with them and filed a baseless restraining order to prevent me from seeing them for more than a few hours a month under close supervision. She skillfully litigated the restraining order matter, even getting my ex to testify that she had no actual concerns about me that would warrant the order's restrictions. We were able to get a 50/50 parenting plan agreed to within a couple days of a judge dismissing the entire restraining order. As my ex continued to throw up roadblocks to avoid the even split we'd talked about, London was able to handle all of them and her priority was always ensuring equity and the wellbeing of my kids rather than resorting to petty tactics or advising that we respond to my ex's roadblocks with escalation. We were able to settle and avoid going to trial, but I know that if we had ended up going to trial, I would have been in good hands.

From my initial phone conference with London through the whole daunting divorce process, I felt heard and supported. London told me more than once that she was my advocate, and she followed through with that. She supported me in my decisions after presenting all legal angles and possible outcomes. She wanted the best for me. When I was in doubt about various issues, London was able to see through the muddle and had a positive outlook on my overall outcome. She always made me feel like I was her only client. When it came to mediation, London chose a very fair and balanced mediator who explained that not everything would go my way (or my ex-spouses way). Despite that, London fought as far as she could when it was needed. It was a long, slow day but when the mediator was consulting with the other side, London was always advising me on her next argument and strategy. London's work was incredibly thorough, timely and organized. I always felt extremely comfortable and confident with the quality of her work. London is truly trustworthy.

I began working with London at their previous firm and decided to follow them. My situation was rather difficult as my case became a cross State, I'm in Washington and I had to move my case to Multnomah County, Oregon. I had an estranged relationship with my 2 children. Limited time, no phone calls or overnights. It was my dream to have more time with them. London became that person I could confide in and helped me learn the justice system. It wasn't easy, many challenges ahead. London learned my background and got to know all parties involved. It took some time to get what I had hoped for. No relationship will ever be perfect. But London helped some of the gap. My kids and I are in a better place today. London also understood my kids language and that made a huge difference. London helped me learn. I strongly recommend London. Just remembering what we went through and feelings of giving up. London reminded me there is hope at the end. Thank you London, I'm forever grateful.

I contacted London in hopes to find someone who was willing to take on a case as atrocious mine. Due to my circumstances it was dire that I have representation. Ms. Ballard was able to take the situation and define it so that in court it was easier to make decisions which lead to having the best outcome for my family. She insured me with her patience and compassion from the beginning that I contacted the right law firm and it took a huge burden off of my shoulder knowing I had her expertise.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
