We had unfortunately hired a “crooked” contractor for a major remodel. He over-charged us (per the contract), did some shoddy work, and then when I called his bluff on the over-charging, he put a lien on our home. Dan understood the situation, got his head around the case, and took us on quickly. They only did the necessary work, but they did it right! End of the day, the court ruled in our favor, with everything going our way. Dan and his team are fantastic!

I had a property dispute with neighbors of mine, and was put in a state of panic from not knowing what my rights were or what I could do. I contacted Mr. Goldstein on a referral from a paralegal friend of our family, and he was more than helpful. He set up a meeting while on vacation and thoroughly reviewed all of my supporting documentation. He even dug deeper on specifically referenced documents to make absolutely sure we were in the right. He was reassuring and precise, and made the process much less stressful than I anticipated it to be. I would absolutely recommend him for any type of real estate council as well as work with him again in the future should such a need arise.

As part of a group of homeowners who purchased townhomes unaware there were unknown defects, I was very skeptical when I found out that the HOA didn't have funds set aside to cover the cost of the needed repairs. We, the current homeowners, were going to be responsible to pay for the repairs, and ti was determined they were builder defects. Dan was hired to represent myself and the other homeowners, and through his thorough fact finding and persistence in representing our cause, he was able to quickly set up an arbitration appointment and at that first and only meeting, we reached a settlement! I had no idea this case would be resolved so quickly and to my satisfaction. Throughout the duration of our case I was kept informed of all steps taken as well as costs incurred. I recommend Dan to anyone needing quality, professional help, provided with the highest integrity, when faced with any type of case he is qualified to handle. Thanks Dan!

My wife and I, along with several other homeowners in our HOA found ourselves in a very frustrating and seemingly helpless situation. We were told on a few occasions that it would not be worth it to pursue legal action as an effort to recover significant repair costs resulting from construction defects in our homes. Then we met Dan Goldstein. He turned everything around for us and explained the position we were in and what our options were. He gave us reasonable expectations that let us make informed decisions. Before we even decided to hire Dan he had already put in meaningful work to strengthen our case and get us on strong footing. He spent hours sending letters to involved parties, researching historical activity, identifying relevant details in the insurance policies etc... We decided to hire Dan and pursue a track to recover some of our construction repair costs, it was quickly determined to be a great decision. Dan was professional, approachable, practical and always accessible (responded personally to an email from me at an unreasonable hour). Dan worked diligently to understand the moving parts that made our case viable. Dan contacted our expert witness on several occasions to verify details, confirm understandings and narrow down ambiguity. Ultimately we ended with the most favorable result possible. We were able to avoid a lenghty trial and received the outcome we hoped for. My wife and I (and presumably the other homeowners involved as well) wholeheartedly appreciate what Dan was able to do for us. We would recommend hiring Dan to any of our friends and family needing an attorney specializing in construction-related matters.

We were about to walk away from a real-estate deal going awry when we decided to consult Dan. Not only did he help us understand our rights, but he also set the other party straight when no one else could. He speaks so logically and respectfully that he got the other party to acquiesce easily. His vast experience helped us weigh out all the possible outcomes and helped us choose the strategy that best fit our situation and, more importantly, our comfort level. He came highly recommended by two separate lawyers that have worked with him on other cases. I wish we had called him sooner instead of enduring countless days of stress. We are so thankful to have found such an amazing attorney represent us.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
