I was arrested for a duii while visiting Portland Oregon. I called his office the day I was released from booking. He called me th hat night. Attorney Lesh explained everything to me in a way that was so easy to understand and he gave me all the time I needed to let it all sink in. He was so nice and didnt get frustrated when I asked him to repeat his explanations (sometime more than two or three times). Since I'm from Massachusetts he was able to get the judge to allow me to return home while waiting for mg court date. He even was able to reschedule my date to a week I was returning to Portland. Once in court he advised me and was able to get me into the diversion program which when completed would get my case dismissed. He was even able to get th he judge to allow me to complete the program in Massachusetts. I would highly recommend David to anyone needing representation. He is down to earth and very approachable. He is always available via phone or email and he always returns calls if he is unable to talk at the time. I dont want to say how much he charged me, but I spoke to 4 others before selecting him. His cost was very very reasonable and I feel I received as good or better service than any of the BIG FIRMS... I hope I never need his services again but if I ever get into trouble again I would not hesitate to call his office. Please give him a call... you wont be disappointed!!!

Mr Lesh was able to resolve some confusion about this rather arcane part of the law. He was very knowledgeable as only someone with extensive prosecutorial experience could be. He will be my first choice in the future for any of my legal needs.

I had a theft II first time offender type of problem. A Class A Misdemeanor. I didn't sleep very much, and this situation preoccupied all my thoughts. It was terrifying and unfortunate. Mr Lesh kept me updated as new changes occurred. Hes very reassuring and a very capable lawyer who will do what it takes to help his clients. If you want peace of mind, this is your man. He turned my Class A Misdemeanor, into a violation, the equivalent of a traffic ticket. You will find no better representation anywhere.

With this experience being my first time needing legal counsel, words can't explain the amount of fear, anxiety and humiliation I felt. The first phone consultation with David I was put at ease by his wealth of knowledge and genuine compassion. David has a thorough understanding of Oregon criminal law; he explained my upcoming legal proceedings carefully, making sure I understood the process while at the same time not making me feel simple or small even when my naiveté was pretty obvious. He was patient and quick to respond to all inquiries which were frequent and many. My criminal offense was DUI related. David listened to my side of the story void of judgment or condescension and provided a clear explanation of my options. I was able to make an informed decision on how best to proceed. His performance in court was compelling and very effective, landing me an outcome I was very happy with. He really helped make the best of a bad situation, helping me turn a dark time into something I feel I can move past. He is truly caring and nothing if not professional and I can't thank Mr. Lesh enough for assisting me through a confusing legal system and I recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone who finds themselves in need of a criminal defense attorney.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
