From the moment I met Jessica, she was professional and a clear advocate for me. I couldn't have asked for a better lawyer to represent me. Throughout our 2+ years working together, she was respectful, caring, knowledgeable, cost-conscious, and clear in her communication. I always knew my options and she didn't hesitate to walk me through them again when I got overwhelmed or give me the time I needed to think about what I wanted to do. I felt fully prepared any time we would go in to negotiations and knew that she was there to get the best outcome for me and my child. Plus, to top it off, she has a good sense of humor, which made the whole process of this high-conflict divorce bearable. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, Jessica is the lawyer you want on your side.

From the moment I talked to Jessica on the phone for my initial consultation, to the moment I received the notice of termination of attorney/client relationship following my divorce, I felt heard, empowered, and respected. Some of the very first things I noticed with Jessica and her team was their promptness and professionalism; they responded same day, sometimes literally within minutes/hours of an email or phone call, which was so important to me in order to keep the process moving forward in a timely manner. They operated like a well-oiled machine, but in a personable way! Reliable, objective, knowledgeable, calm.. all of which I wanted and needed going through a divorce. They were efficient with their communication, which seemed intentional and it made me feel that they were mindful about their time and resources and the eventual cost to me as their client. I can genuinely say that Jessica was not only a vital part of my divorce from a legal standpoint, but she helped me mentally and emotionally by making the most unpleasant and stressful period of my life a little less so because of her support. I knew she had my best interest in mind and that brought me moments of peace and gratitude during an otherwise very turbulent time. Can't recommend Jessica enough!! I will be forever grateful!

Jessica was recommended to me by U.S. Department of State's office as one of the experienced lawyers dealing in international family cases, and I have many times since thought what stroke of luck or faith it was as I can not imagine having a better advocate and counsel on my side through what was not an easy legal process. From the very initial contact, Jessica showed that she was a real professional, fully analyzing all the aspects of the case and making sure that she can set aside time to you as a client, but once you have her on your side you simply constantly get amazed by who she is and what she can do! Through months of intensive work, she shifted her roles at need from a (1) professional and brilliant lawyer who has strategy well thought of, thinks few steps in advance, prepares, consults with other professionals and makes sure that the work done by her and her team is nothing short of exemplary, (2) consultant who lays out to you all possible scenarios and takes time to help you understand each step of legal process, helps you through decision process when decisions need to be made and does not promise what she can not back up, (3) personal counsel who always has your and your family's interest at heart, shows compassion when you need it and gives you strength at darkest times and when you loose faith and feel overwhelmed. Whatever problem we encountered she always faced them head on, not loosing the focus for a second, not running away from facing the opposing side when needed and fighting for me fiercely in the courtroom, but at all times still doing it respectfully and gracefully. I admire her dedication and hard work and would sincerely recommend to anyone needing a representation in a family case, of having Jessica and her team by your side, as I have really not seen better. She and her team showed respect at all times for our cultural differences and were always open to hear, understand and explain, always making sure I felt involved in the process. Through what was an undeniably the most difficult period of my life, Jessica's knowledgeable, factual, intelligent and fierce yet compassionate approach really helped me restore my faith in humanity and moral and justice and I will forever remain grateful for having had this kind of support and friend by my side...

Jennifer was court appointed to me, and I feel fortunate to have had her assigned to my case. Her investigator was such a positive player on her team. I was told that Jennifer was a “Bulldog” and would work hard for me. She did just that! Having serious charges I was faced with.. my gal got my caseDismissed! Honestly she changed my life!

I’ve never needed a lawyer for anything so I searched for lawyers near me that could assist with my needs, and Graham Fisher was the first one I looked at. From the first phone call, and then in-person meeting just a few hours later, it was clear I didn’t need to look any further. Graham is professional, kind, extremely responsive, and helpful every step of the way. I don’t believe I could have found someone better - I would definitely recommend Graham!

After determining that the only viable option for us in a dispute with our neighbor, was hiring an attorney, we found Mr. Hammond thru search engines and reviews. Our choice to go with Mr. Hammond fit our situation well. Mr. Hammond had a very calming and reassuring presence, that helped greatly with navigating us through this process. He was honest with what to expect and came up with some very creative and resourceful options for us to consider. His knowledge and understanding was greatly appreciated. We would have him represent us again, if needed. S. Schroeder, Oregon

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
