After recommendations from several Portland friends working in law, I hired Zach. He helped navigate my divorce when it became clear during mediation, I needed my own legal counsel. He was thorough and detailed in working through unexpected challenges as the process repeatedly bogged down. I feel fortunate to have had his excellent assistance in getting through an unpleasant divorce. It's good to look back over the process and have no regrets about the amount of trust you placed in your attorney. He is a great guy, and I highly recommend Zach.

All divorces are complicated but mine also involved a criminal aspect. Zach was able to help me through both with the utmost compassion, intelligence and professionalism. I was impressed by how he managed dealing with the added aspect of this case while doing an impeccable job handling the divorce. He guided me to other sources when appropriate without overcomplicating. He was very good about explaining each and every detail throughout. I would not hesitate to recommend Zach to a friend. He's trustworthy, sharp and efficient.

Zach took over my divorce case after my then current lawyer was unresponsive to my case. He made the transition very easy, kept me informed and was extremely professional. He had my case settled very quickly with the desired outcome. Although I'm sure he has several clients, he was always clear and accurate on the details of my case. I highly recommend Zach!

When I realized I needed a family law attorney, I called another legal professional whom I know and trust. He had fielded many calls like mine before, and had already done the homework for his clients, so he could make a sound recommendation. He suggested I contact Zach Fruchtengarten. The process of marital disentanglement can feel and be very complicated. Emotions run high. There is fear of the unknown. And one must make very important personal and financial decisions along the way that can have effects for a lifetime. From start to finish, Zach was a steadfast advocate for the best interests of me and my children. Zach’s approach was steady and grounded in integrity throughout the entire process. He was professional and respectful in every communication – every call, every letter, every interaction – while fervently supporting my interests. And Zach didn’t just “act” on my behalf. He took the time to listen. And I truly felt that he understood the details of my situation, and me as a unique individual. He knew when I needed information and exactly how to deliver it. He was clear and firm in providing professional guidance, but also compassionate. Both Zach (and Alison, Zach’s assistant) were there to provide support during this stressful personal time. This was truly priceless. While my financial situation was not complicated, Zach used his keen sense of business acumen to help me move through both the big picture financial decisions, as well as the multitude of minor details, that collectively, can have a big impact. Real estate issues. Dependency deductions. Child support. Life insurance. Summer camps. College education. The list goes on and on. No stone was left unturned. I obviously made investments in Zach’s time to help me move through these important matters, because I could not do it alone. And it was a very sound investment. Every interaction I had with the Gevurtz Menashe team was incredibly professional and courteous. They did not miss a beat. And everyone who goes through this process called divorce wants it to be over as quickly as possible. I was very fortunate to have Zach and his team working on my behalf. They were ALL incredibly responsive, and able to keep the process moving, so I could move on with parenting my children and start a new phase life. I am very grateful to have found Zach and Alison. Their professionalism was incredible and they were genuinely kind throughout such a very difficult time. I highly recommend them to anyone.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
