Where do I start? From the moment I contacted Jake I felt at ease. Facing criminal charges is no joke and to say I was stressed out would be an understatement. Jake listened to my side of the story and spent nearly an hour with me. He went over several different ways he could approach my case, including ones that didn't involve hiring him. I decided to have him represent me and it was the best decision I could have made. Jake's knowledge of the legal system was amazing. Through the whole process he was easy to get a hold of and worked around my schedule. Even at 9 pm he was working on my behalf. He was able to get the charge dismissed and kept me out of the system, protected my family and saved my career. He's a fantastic person who works off the facts, passes no judgement and does his level best to get you the most desirable outcome. Thank you a thousand times, Jake!

Jacob Braunstein is the only attorney I'll ever work with if I can help it. He has represented both me and one of my adult children on different issues and I couldn't be happier with his services. I sought help from Mr. Braunstein when I needed to file bankruptcy. He and his staff function like a well oiled machine and I recommend him to everyone I know. Mr. Braunstein is very patient and obviously cares about his clients. I had a ton of questions but he didn't treat me like I was a bother and he took a lot of time to answer all of my questions. He was also able to work with my schedule, which meant meeting me on the weekend. He's a great attorney who really seems to care about his clients.

I was referred to Jake by one of my good buddies who'd gotten into some legal trouble before. He said, "Call Jake. The dude's awesome!" So I called on the weekend expecting to get a voicemail and he actually picked up the phone. I explained my situation and he said he could meet with me that afternoon since I work long hours all week. First off, my friend was right. Jake is really laid back and easy to talk to. He didn't judge, he just wanted to hear my side of the story. He didn't try to push a contract at me or pressure me into hiring him to help me with my case. He was straightforward, honest, and told me about all of my options, not just the ones that involved hiring him. I ended up choosing Jake to represent me that day. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. He knew the process inside and out and he helped me every step of the way. It was obvious the judge knew him. She told me right there that Jake had gotten me the deal of the century and normally the prosecutor doesn't agree to things like that. Thanks to Jake and all the work he did on my case, I was able to get the most serious charges dismissed and one of them converted from a felony to a misdemeanor. I was able to stay out of jail and keep my job thanks to Jake. If you need an awesome attorney, call him. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

I don't even know where to begin. I was really nervous about hiring a lawyer. There are so many to choose from and I had never needed a lawyer before. But I found myself in way over my head trying to get caught back up with my debts after losing my job. I had been recommended to Jacob by a friend who had also filed bankruptcy, and I am so lucky I called. He answered his own phone, answered all my questions and never once tried to hurry me off the phone. Then we scheduled an appointment and there was no fee for meeting him. I knew once I met him in person I had chosen the best person for me. He is really laid back, but professional at the same time. He helped me understand all of my options, answered all of my questions throughout the process, and was a great support. My bankruptcy went through quickly and the meeting of creditors was a breeze because he prepared me for everything ahead of time. And his fees were really inexpensive compared to some of the other attorneys I spoke with. He really helped me get my life back on track.

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
